HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.

Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin

For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

ALRIGHT! im chasing you around the board.... sit still. Laughing

So it looks like the factory 944 radiator is in there. The hose routing could be due to that as it where. You may want to think of an upgrade if he was trying to enlarge coolant volume. The radiator in there (if its a 944 rad) is about 280 square inches or core surface area; so for an already hot LT1, its a bit undersized. It also has only 1 row as well. Are you running hot??? Have you checked the raw temperature at speed with a mechanical thermometer (not the stock gauge)? This is good info to know.

As far as I know, there isnt really any hose that fits this setup. You may want to PM Paul (948) here and ask him whatup. I believe he is running the 944 turbo radiator plus custom Al shroud. He may also give you his hose part numbers and possibly the plans to his secondary heat exchanger made from a turbo intercooler.....really cool (pun). Laughing

Ya, I didn't want to thread crap.

Anyway, yes, good eye, its is all of what you said.

1
Stock 88 944S radiator (don't know if the S is larger or the same)
2
Running rich (from another post, will give you high underhood temps)
3
Not tuned properly - will help get things down
4
sticky throttle cable, keeps idle high, more underhood temps
5
May have overheated, but def has run warm, PO has stated.
6
Has computer that can datalog (OBDI), so I will see what temps the sender is showing. However, with 0'F temps, I won't have to worry anytime soon. I don't plan on driving this beast for 3 months.
7
I plan to get rid of the snakes, to find the "stock" hoses for now. I will see how bad that stock Rad is. There may be things I can do help, firstly, tune the beast.

I will try to contact him, thanks. Does the manual have part numbers? I can't wait for that to show up!!!

It lists the H-valve used by many and heater hoses.

Heater Control Valve = Autozone PN 5930 from 1993-1994 suburbans Made by Everco
Molded heater hoses: Autozone numbers and Made by Kelly Springfield
3/4" x 27" = L-4204 $9
5/8" x 39" = M-4106 $12

As far as the upper and lower radiator hoses, theres no exact hose thats been claimed as a perfect fit. What you'll have to do is go to say autozone and ask them to let you behind the counter and check for a close match. Then trim the hoses to fit. When I was converting to the LT engine, doing this was not a problem. But I dont know what PN I used for either. Sorry.

Yeah, what he said... Embarassed

For radiators, heater hoses, and the heater "H" valve. No radiator hoses, as most have been custom fitted, or not very well documented...

The Manual has shipped, but I don't have tracking info due to it coming to Canada.
Sorry G.

(It is about time for a revision, though...
These are posted as .pdfs on 944v8s.com Technical page.)

I will contribute what I can. I can't decide if I should put a used 944T radiator in there while I am at it. I am only half way through that big cooling article.

I will post whatever part numbers I can get from my mechanic, when I get around to it.

Take a look at the links in my old post, and get back to me with any questions.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

My basic set-up is as follows;
951 Rad (Was an HMR 951 rad, but it failed)
Stock 951 6 blade fans and shroud.
Radiator is tilted forward ~ 7 degrees to allow room for fans
Secondary cooling system, in intercooler location (See Pic)
H valve
Universal AC core in original location
Stock Oil cooler

An option that has been mentioned on and off by myself on various forums is the lat 944S cabriolet radiator. It physically bigger that the turbo radiator by maybe 10-15%. I at one time had pictures posted. But I am sure those are long gone. Another LT1 guy used the same cab rad and it worked for him too. I believe he posted pics as well on PHB.

Why the bigger radiator in the cabs you ask? Air conditioning needs more capacity as the top is a huge air leak for the cool air to escape in the summer and far more condensation to remove in the winter.

Biggest heat problems I have found on the stock rads or even aftermarket for that matter is the beat to sh** AC condenser that is blocking air flow. On every conversion I have done that was a must replace as you already have the ac open anyway. As I recall last one was around $150-$200.

Post  v8944 Fri Feb 05, 2010 12:06 pm

i have had NO problems running the stock 944 n/a radiator...i even found some radiator hoses that were SO close i had to trim maybe an inch or two off of each and they fit. For the heater core hoses i just ran some high pressure high temp 1 inch (maybe 1.5) hose from the flow out valve in the water pump, to the heater core, then i ran one hose back to a t-junction on the low pressure side of the radidiator...works great.

I hooked up a mechanical temp gauge to the front of the water pump so i can watch the temps...i never see above 205 even on the hottest summer dies driving her hard. I had some overheating problems early on in the build, turned out i had an air bubble in the engine and the water pump couldn't pull on the bubble....if i were you i would make sure that you have the system COMPLETELY bled first of all, before messing with hoses...i took the thermostat out and poured directly into the block until the water came right up to the edge and stayed up. then i refilled the overflow the reservoir.
