For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Hello,

There are two basic types of differentials, the torsen or gear type and the clutch type. Sure, there are a lot of variations and combinations of each of the designs. Which is the LSD that comes in the some of the turbo boxes? I was under the impression that it was a torsen but looking at this diagram: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] it doesn't look like one, in fact it looks like a clutch pack almost????? I realize that the torsen can't "divide by zero" so if a wheel comes up on the track everything goes out the window, but I like the fact that there are no directly wearing parts (the clutch plates). However, ironically, the way a clutch pack handles is more predictable so I guess I wouldn't care either way because I prefer the feel. The clutches match wheel RPM where the torsen matches the torque.

1. What are the juicy details and personal experiences with the stock LSD

2. Opinions as to what type is good in these cars/what do you use?

3. What is the cheapest option out there, the stock diff from DC auto is the lowest I've found: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
The Audi diff seems like a good way to go but I haven't been able to find one and I'm not sure I feel comfortable with the conversion anyway. Shocked

I have 2 944 transmissions with the LSD. I like them just fine, but the torsen is the better one IIRC. The Stock 944 is clutch type.

I imagine the LSD units are not what you need to worry about when abusing these transaxles. I try not to abuse mine while still having fun with it. I don't want to be the guy that has to figure out how much abuse will cost me after the fact.....

I forgot about the Audi swap--i remember there was a writeup on PHB about how to do that. Anybody have that handy? Or is it in the manual? (Crap, i need to get one of those...but i owe a ton on taxes so i'll be broke for a few months...)

LSD is definitely on my "to do" list.

You don't really have to abuse the transaxle to abuse a clutch type diff. If you go around a corner hard enough to really reduce weight on the inside wheel it won't take much power to burn the hell out of the clutch disks while they try to hold all the power to the outside wheel. By the looks of it only three disks isn't going to cut it. Modern clutch packs designed to stand up to constant hard cornering often have like 28 or more disks. Drag racing is whole other story.

you need to follow the links a bit. I really haven't been able to find any information on the Audi diffs, and I certainly have been having a hard time finding one? Any suggestions?
