HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.
Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin
For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.
When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).
After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

87 Base Automatic conversion
Hi Gents,
Just purchased my 2nd 944, an automatic Lemon Yellow 87 NA. I don't find anything on here to guide me for a swap. Assume I am looking for a LS1, 2, or 3. Have talked to Kent at TPC and Renegade, get differing opinions as to whether I am completely crazy to use this as a starting point. Doing this as a project w my 22 year old son. TIA for any and all help!

Help me not re-invent the wheel!
Still looking for wisdom concerning swapping into an 87 Auto 944 Base model. Has anyone done this with something mild, like an LS1 and not blown up the drive line? Upgrade suggestions? Thanks!

Re: 87 Base Automatic conversion
the automatic isnt going to last, they were originally designed for sub 100 hp cars, then made stronger for the 944 and some audis. there is nothing you can really do to make them hold the power of a v8.
if you want to try it the swap is done much the same. you use the same bellhousing and adapter as doing the swap in a manual, as well as using a flywheel and clutch, you just dont put a slave cylinder in as there is no reason to disengage the clutch.
id highly recommend doing a manual swap with the turbo transaxle, or if you have to have an auto go with a corvette setup.

Hey Sharkey,
It was very kind of you to take the time to reply, thanks!
I looked thru your photos, very cool build. What was your donor engine? How did you do at the track?
When you recommend I go with Corvette setup, are you referring to the LS1? I assume cause it will do less damage?
Do you have a fave supplier?
Thanks, Tim and James (my son)

Re: 87 Base Automatic conversion
my engine is the same as whats in a chevy cobalt, although a well built version of it. i ran a 13.0 at 115 at the track, and its got a lot more left in it.
when i said go with a corvette setup for an automatic, i was referring to the corvette torque tube and automatic transaxle. either an ls1/ls2 with a 4l60e, or an ls2/ls3 with a 6l80. neither is an easy easy build, its going to require redoing the rear suspension and cutting redoing the floor in the back seat. but for an auto, in my eyes, its the only way, the stock automatic trans is just a no go for v8 power.
