For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.
When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).
After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Federal Crime?
Is it really a federal crime to not put a cat in the exhaust system of our converted cars?

Re: Federal Crime?
The federal Clean Air Act [203 (a) (3) (A) and (B)] does
not allow anyone to replace a catalytic converter with
“replacement pipes”. Improper removal or installation of
a catalytic converter by any individual could result in stiff
fines and/or imprisonment.
The only time when removal of a catalytic converter is
allowed is when the vehicle is being shipped to a country
that does not sell unleaded gasoline. The vehicle owner
must have a letter from the EPA authorizing the catalytic
converter’s removal. Vehicles sent to Canada or Mexico
are not eligible for this exemption.

Geez whata doubting Thomas.

I dunno, but why not just put a cat on there? A high flow cat only costs you 1-3hp on the top end (not talking out of my ass either, i've seen dyno results).

Re: Federal Crime?
It will be louder......like that would stop anyone.
An old friend had a mustang with duals and was pulled over. Cop checked it for cats since it was a bit loud...found none and fined him $500.00. But, since it was a dual set-up, he was fined another 500 because there needed to be two! Pretty stiff for an $80 cat.
Beyond legalities, what about the puppies and kittens?

That's a good point. Without a cat, you could fit at least 3 of each in the exhaust!

I figured I would just run a second muffler, one of those straight through magnaflows. It would look like a cat and help with the noise.

Re: Federal Crime?
yeah, I'll just add a high flow cat. Just wondering how stiff the regulations really are. I'm a bit of tree hugger too, all of our electricity comes from our wind generator. SooooOOOOoOOoooOoO I really should feel guilty.
