HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.

Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin

For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Steering rack universal joint hits 1/2" setback plate

Post  endrnet on Sun Nov 15, 2009 7:31 pm

Anyone have this issue?

The ujoint hits the plate behind the sbc mount, also the hard lines are about 1/64" from the engine block and modded Moroso pan. I guess I could cut the top plate in half and use the front part as a spacer only for the drivers side.

Sorry, I know everyone is addicted to pictures, should have known better than to ask a question without pixels.

It's actually very difficult to get a camera in there to snap a shot.

Q for U...
How much hood clearance do you have? Any crossmember spacers?
(OK, that's 2...)

Didn't I tell you those mounts are too short? When the hypotenuse is shortened, the top tube (motor mount bolt) also moves...in this case, rearward. This also moves the engine back (closer to the steering shaft). You can hack at those set-back plates until Elvis comes back, but it won't solve your problem.

I guess I could cut the top plate in half and use the front part as a spacer only for the drivers side.
See the above...

Tell you what...

I'll send you a set of LT / LS mounts that I have. They definitely bolt up to a 2001 Corvette LS in a 1987 Turbo, with .50" crossmember spacers and set-back plates.
And the hood closes.

If they work for your car, you can PayPal me.
If not, I'll find you a set that will...

Got the uprights and they are in. Long story short, the correct upright geometry and 1/2" xmember spacers made everything "simply fit" the way I was hoping it would.

Here's the list of problems that went away:

1) The rack PS hardlines now have enough clearance that they are not crushed by the engine and future engine settling.
2) The lower steering shaft universal joint no longer strikes the setback plate.
3) An *unmodified* carshopinc plate you can get for fifty clams fits great.
4) The hood closed without any hood rib cuts! I'll probably trim the ribs anyway just for clearance.

As always, pictures are worth more... click the thumbnails for better detail.

The rack has good space now:

The hood closes with 1/2" spacers:

Greg, you went above and beyond, and turned out know your stuff. No grinding, welding, drilling, or cutting required! However, I'm never giving you these uprights back, you'll have to make some more! Ha!

Very Happy

Problem solved, on to the next thing... wiring harness & electrical! Suspect
