For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Early Steel A-Arms Modified to Fit Late Offset Empty Early Steel A-Arms Modified to Fit Late Offset

I am currently working on making my steel A-arms work with the late offset suspension. I didn't want to switch to the aluminum A-arms so that I can retain the replaceable ball-joints and so on. I saw a member here had done this conversion (his pictures are in this thread). So I got out the calipers and made this drawing that I am sending to a machinist who has made a few parts for me before. You could probably do it by hand. A nice quick way would be to make a bunch on a cnc plasma or waterjet.

I figured some here may be interested in the drawings. I will let you know if it all works out. If someone is interested in having some made, I can give you a quote for the plates once I have a quote.

Got a pair of rear mount clips and a pair of sway bar brackets from a early offset car in a wrecking yard.
Lower ball joints can now be changed in minutes.
Whole job for the pair less than $250

Early Steel A-Arms Modified to Fit Late Offset Empty Re: Early Steel A-Arms Modified to Fit Late Offset

Unfortunately, I was quoted 4.5 hours for 4 plates. So $225. Too much for me. I am going to keep looking into other ways. My thought is a hole saw and some accurate hand drilling... But cutting through 1/4" steel with a hole saw on a hand drill sucks. I need to get my Clausing 20" drill press working sooner. That with an XY table could knock these things out.

Anyone got a line on someone with a water jet or plasma cnc?

Good news, getting some quotes on the pieces from waterjet cutting services. Much better pricing. Should be around $100 for a set of 4 plates. Just the plates that go on the outside of the control arm for spacing the ball joint out. The 1/4" plate that fits between can be made at home easily I think.

keep us in the loop. How accurate is the drawing?. I have been searching for simon123 but cant find. I have a machinist that i think could do this all in one piece maybe. I will talk to him as he will deal in cash money.

waterjet cutting is pretty cheap, if you plan on making some sets of these just have them add the middle plate to the drawing. really the cost is all in the drawing time, cutting takes no time at all.

The other issue i see is dollars and cents. Front a camber side a set of adjustable camber plates run 300.00 for a good set this takes care of adjustment. Then it is just the offset that comes into play. Not the end of the world to have two different offsets. Just my thoughts.

I am running late spindles and struts with these, so I will not need camber plates.  I will need late tie rods however.

I can add the inner plate to the order I suppose.  I will make a drawing for that tomorrow.

The drawing is accurate, as long as I measured correctly. I used a caliper for everything.

I am running a full S2 suspension in my 78 924, But to correct for the early a-arms camber plates are needed unless we can get the ends made at a good rate.

Yep, that's why I was thinking these would be good. Cheaper than camber plates, and you get the advantage of late offset. If that is advantageous to you... In my case, it will allow me to run my late turbo twist wheels.

My first set got cut and right away I realized I made a mistake.  The radius I have cut to clear the ball joint was not far enough towards the mounting holes...  And the plate is a little too wide for the control arms.   The good news is that my bolt pattern works great.  I will have modified drawings sent to the cutter soon.  I also plan to add two 14gauge spacers so that steel plates don't have to flex to clamp on the ball joint.  I think this will work better.  Here are some pictures after some grinding with my original designs.

If anyone would like these, they will be  $50a set for a car.  Please let me know if you would like a set.  The quicker you let me know, the better.  I plan to order soon.

Thanks!

EDIT: Spent some time in the garage today. I bought a chunk of steel and used it at the ball joint end to space out the plates around the ball joint. Seemed to work great. I will plan to have two 14 gauge steel pieces laser cut for this. So in total it will be 5 plates per side of the car. If anyone is interested.

Stay tuned, the next project I am working on is Z06 brakes using 350mm Cayenne rotor centering rings.
