For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

New to site , sbc to 944

Post  Keith38 on Mon Sep 04, 2017 8:53 pm

Hello everyone ... I'm new to the Porsche projects as I'm a old school chevy guy, my 16 year old son purchased not one but two Porsche 944's an 86 and 87 he is going to use the 86 as the body is mint and car is complete and runs, it is an automatic which I am happy about for his first car, my questions as these cars are out of my zone, I have sbc stuff so I read c5 bellhousing to connect to torque tube but everything I read 1.. is Manual transmission conversions this whole torque tube throws me for a loop . What do I need to buy to connect the torque tube to a sbc? Crank bushing? Flywheel? All and any info will help and is appreciated thank you .

im not aware of anyone who has done a v8 swap in an automatic car. you will likely be able to use the corvette bellhousing and the same torque tube adapter used in manual trans v8 swaps, however connecting the torque tube is where the problem comes in. the automatic torque tube uses a rubber drive coupler that bolts to the flywheel on the 2.5l. it looks like this

you may be able to have a sbc flywheel machined to bolt this to it.

the other thing to consider is the strength of the 944 automatic. from what i know its the same basic 3 speed vw adapts for use in many different applications, from busses to golfs and everything in between. it was never designed to take a lot of power, in fact im not aware of anything above 160hp that used it.

Adapt a 928 FRONT Automatic coupler to the Chevy flywheel.[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
