HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.
Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin
For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.
When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).
After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Cooling solutions please!
Hello Guys,
I have been kicking around moving a bigger radiator to the rear of the car for a few reasons. More cooling capacity, balance the weight of the swap out more, make more room up front for a bigger intercooler.
I am running an all aluminum Turbo radiator on my LS 4.8 turbocharged 944. It cools fine going down the road but when I start rodding on it, it gets hot and doesn't recover well. Last weekend I was at the track on a 80 degree day and I would hold it wide open for about 1/2 mile and the temp would get up to 215 to 223 one time. Then I would have to go about 60mph around the rest of the 3 mile track to let it cool. I want something that can handle full laps of hard throttle.
What would you guys do?
I have already cut another hole in the bumper to allow more flow to the current radiator. If I did a rear mount I would cut out the spare tire well and flow air from the bottom of the car and also use some NACA ducts in the rear quarter windows to flow more air to the top of it.
Any other ideas or concerns with my plan is appreciated.
Thanks

Re: Cooling solutions please!
Superior Radiator in Mount Clemens, MI custom makes good radiators to any dimensions you want.
I got the one from them thru TPC, so if you order thru TPC it will bolt up nicely, and I haven't had any issues with it on my LS3. Running without AC, no problems at all (idle, track, etc) even on hot days. With the AC running, especially when it's over 100F outside, the temp starts to climb a bit more, but I haven't seen it get high enough to make me nervous yet. But I haven't run AC on a track day, although I doubt you would really need that.
My only recommendation if you have an aluminum radiator up front, add thicker plates on the top where the two pegs hold the radiator down. My radiator is the lowest point up front (or more so the bracket that holds the radiator), and I whacked it on a dip entering a parking lot, which pushed the radiator up and pierced the top with the pegs that hold it down. So now I have thicker plates, and I raised the ride height a little too for safety.
Good luck!

Remember that it takes more than a big hole up font to let a radiator cool. Making sure that the hot air behind the radiator has a good low pressure exit path is an essential part of cooling. If the air behind the radiator ends up largely trapped and stagnant in a high pressure bubble then very little fresh, cool air can enter the front of the car no matter how big the holes or speed of the car.

Front end air needs to go through and not around the radiator, it may even need to be sealed so it can't go around. That includes any aftercooler or oil cooler air. hood vents forward of a line between the struts and/or belly pans running well behind the radiator will help improve the low pressure area behind the radiator and as a result, flow.
A rear mounted radiator wouldn't do well in regards to air flow, leaks or bleeding the system. If you feel you must separate the coolers from the radiator, move the coolers to the rear.

Re: Cooling solutions please!
I will 2nd racertomtom's and 3rd erioshi's comments. Hood vents was the solution for my track car. Before that, I cut open the bumper and installed a nice, expensive Wizard radiator and those things helped very little. When I added hood vents things improved dramatically. Here they are:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Key was to position them as far forward as possible, definitely forward of the strut towers. And make sure that the seal at the back of the hood with the firewall is in place and in good shape. The back of the hood, base of the windshield will never be an air exit for the engine bay. That is a high pressure area. And the belly pan is key as well. Mine is an aftermarket deal from the radiator back to the crossmember.
Recently, since the pictures above, I've converted to a turbo bumper and added TPC's lower lip spoiler. This extends back to my belly pan and gives a nice flat floor. This helped cooling even more. Of course, none of this allows for an intercooler... Best of luck.

Re: Cooling solutions please!
I'm willing to give a hood vent a try if you guys think it would help enough to see a difference. I don't want to cut the hood up only to have it not work!
The next issue I have with a hood vent is finding one I like with the stripe I have painted on one side of the hood.
Any good looking hood vents out there?
Thanks

If you have facebook, check out "Just joshin Porsche 944 Parts"
Located out of Maryland, and I have bought numerous parts from him... Well he just posted a hood that had a scoop cutout for $100, or $75 for just the scoop.
Not sure if that is what you would want, but just came across it after checking here.

I thought about installing a 968 turbo RS hood scoop. Should fit and looks like the original design was to allow air to escape out of a low pressure area.

Re: Cooling solutions please!
That's a great idea to get another hood for the experiment to make sure it helps before you cut up your good, striped hood. I cut into mine, which isn't in great shape, fully prepared to get a new one without holes if it didn't help. But it did! The louver panels are steel and came from 928 Motorsports.
The nose panel was a cheapo fiberglass knock-off of the 924 turbo with 4 holes. This came from some eBay seller. I filled and glassed over the outer holes, leaving only the middle ones and rattle can finished it. This worked okay and looked okay but the new turbo bumper is better in both regards. I have an RX-7 oil cooler in place of the intercooler using all the factory ducting from the turbo nose.
