HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.
Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin
For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.
When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).
After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Anyone install an electric water pump?
I'm considering installing a Meziere electric water pump. Despite having a RH radiator and electric fans I don't like how high the temp seems to get. It's 90+ degrees here now and my temp gauge seem to get to the orange area way to often. It's distracting and takes away from the enjoyment of driving this car. In addition, If I "up" the HP with some reasonable upgrades, the problem will only get worse.
The pump Meziere pump is 3.5" deep, fits onto the front of the standard water pump. There doesn't appear to be sufficient room for it in the 944. I'd have to cut the fan shroud at a minimum. I think it would also have a interference problem with the headlight bar.
All opinions welcome.

I've got one in my car. I don't think it would help you with cooling though.

An electric water pump won't help you. Your issue is either not enough fan, or your shroud isn't efficiently pulling from the radiator. Another issue the LS motors have is that the radiator sits lower than the top of the heads so air sits in the heads because it is the highest point in the system. Once the motor gets hot, it creates steam and that obviously creates heat. More heat than hot water itself.
What you want to do is get the trick flow steam lines and hook that up to a Howe racing water aerator. That way the highest point is the top of the aerator. And the steam can sit there all it wants and your cap on that will control it.
Between your radiator and shroud you want an air tight seal. That way it gives you a clean tight suction through the radiator with out that suction bleeding off with gaps. I have a LS3 bored and stroked to a 426 and it needs serious cooling. That's what I did to get it under control after about a year of figuring this all out.

I have a LT1 in my car. From what I can google it looks like the OEM pump pushes around 19 gpm at 3500 RPM. The electric pump will push 50 gpm continuously.
I'm open minded to solutions. I'm just trying to solve a potential problem.

op has an LT1, so steam ports in the heads arent an issue for him.
the lt1 can suffer a bit from low coolant flow at idle. i ran across it in a recent lt1 build a friend did on a 95 camaro, at idle the temp would slowly climb up, bring the rpm up a little and it would come back down, and when driving it stays in check. upon searching this appears to be a common issue on all lt1, lt4 and l99 cars, and is more common with non oem replacement water pumps. a lot of people tend to go with the meziere water pump and it solves the problem.
now that being said, there can be more issues in the cooling system with a v8 swap. when do you notice the temp climbs up the most, during driving or at idle? how are your fans controlled, the stock system or using the lt1 computer? at what temps do the fans come on? what rad are you running?
