For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Can I change S2 5th gear??

Post  murrayg on Tue Apr 25, 2017 1:51 am

Hi all,

I'm using a S2 box because thats what I had. While it's a blast around town, it is not very nice on the highway. This less than optimal gearing is well known and well discussed on the boards. I've searched and been to Clarks Garage, and I'm confused. Can I replace the 5th gear set to help here. I understand the real problem is the FDR, bet would another 5th gear set help. And which one???

Thanks.
Gord.

Sure you can. Your AOS/AOT box has a 0.77 5th gear set. The long 5th from the 5S box is 0.72 and the short 5th people want to ditch from the AOR is 0.82. So going to the long 5th would lower your revs at the same speed in 5th gear but only about half as much as it does the turbo boxes.

Thanks Rich,

I have the QM box that was in the car (early 85). That also has the .72 gearset. Can I use it in the AOS? If it's easy to do, I'll go ahead, even if the benefit is marginal. Cost is nothing!

yea that gearset will work just fine. its not too hard to do, but you either gotta pull the trans out, or cut the hole in the spare tire well.

Cool Gord. I've not done it but there's a good write-up in the wiki. That .77 gear set is the one I want, care to sell/trade? What I have the .82 in my AOR.

Hi Rich,

Sorry, but this won't be happening anytime soon! I'm 6000 kms away from the car until the end of the summer. I'm just building a list of things to do when I return.

ciao,
Gord.

Copy. No hurry here either as the car is up and running for track season. When you get them out, ping me on here. Thanks.
