HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.
Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin
For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.
When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).
After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Manual brakes with big reds
Trying to figure out if it would work. Ls3 mildly tuned.( 525hp )
Brakes manual. Stock porsche Master cilinder? Front big reds, rear original 951 calipers.
Or do i really need more stopping power?
Have either the 5/18 or 5/33 brake bias valve

Manual brakes will work but I think you will need a dual master cylinder system to be effective. I have a DMC setup that works great with factory 951 brakes there is no reason that it would not work with proper sized MC's for your calipers. That said, hydroboost with the factory MC would probably be best for big toe braking.

Hydroboost and factory master cylinder is the best way to go.

Is there a how to for the hydroboost setup?
Want to use the porsche ps pump if possible. Is the bmw unit the best option since it can use the porsche mc?

Re: Manual brakes with big reds
Why do you want to use the porsche PS pump? How are you planning on doing that? Custom brackets, custom belt, custom ???
The best bet is to use the Ford Mustang hydroboost unit with the 951 MC and the adapter you can get from TPC along with a Turn 1 F body PS pump.
Or you can also use the BMW hydroboost system with the 951 MC, but the BMW system is much harder to find and more expensive...

My Hydraboost setup.
My recommendation would be to stick with all Ford Mustang for two reasons, availability and cost.
Use the Mustang Hydraboost unit with its proportioning valve and the stock Mustang Master Cylinder.
Power the whole thing with a Turn One PS Pump. The return line to the Pump Reservoir goes via the original 944 cooler now located on the drivers side.
Strictly my solution that does not require negative criticism.

Re: Manual brakes with big reds
Ummmm, negative criticism?? Ok....
This isn't negative criticism, this is experience talking from hard use. It's your car and you have to make the decisions that you feel are best for you. However this is my experience from running my car for many years...
I ran that exact same set up full Mustang MC and hydroboost for over 5 years. It works. It works fairly well on the street.
It's *terrifying* on the track under threshold braking. The Mustang MC has the wrong piston sizes, thus giving the wrong brake bias and pedal stroke. This isn't so apparent on the street but extremely apparent on the track under hard braking.
I somewhat solved the bias issues by installing a Tilton infinitely adjustable brake proportioning valve. However the Mustang MC also makes it difficult to modulate the brakes as the pedal stroke is so short due to the larger piston sizes.
That makes it very hard to threshold brake on the track and it also made it very easy for me to get the Boxster ABS to go into "Ice Mode" on the track and not have any braking control at all.
So yes, you can run the entire Mustang Hydroboost and if your car is solely a street car it'll largely work fine. However, I wouldn't run it without at least a Tilton Adjustable proportioning valve and I really wouldn't run the Mustang MC at all now that adapters are available to mate the Porsche 951 MC with the Mustang hydroboost unit...

Also keep in mind he is using different sized calipers than most... He is using LS430 front calipers (4 x 42mm) and RX7 front calipers on the rear (4 x 36mm). I'm also using these brakes with the mustang master cylinder and a wilwood proportioning valve.
The mustang master cylinder is probably better suited for the larger sized calipers. Relax guys....

I have Big Red's up front and Factory Turbo S calipers in the back. Not sure how that compares to the Lexus/RX7 stuff.
No one is getting excited here, just stating the facts.

44/36 mm big reds fronts
28/30mm 944 turbo s rears
big difference... Thats why the stock 944 master works well with your setup.

My 2 cents worth
Whatever one posts here there is always someone that has a better way of doing things.
My approach is simplicity and cost, I can go to the local Ford dealer and buy parts over the counter for my brake hydraulics at sensible prices.
My car is not a racer, I once raced Minisprints on dirt and very quick learned that:
RACING = MONEY PIT
My local SCCA medical examiner races and and spends a fortune on tires and improvements for fractions of a second decrease in his lap times.
That's why when I post my suggestions I don't want to be told that my ideas are not suitable but yours are.

Re: Manual brakes with big reds
I never said your ideas weren't suitable or that your setup was wrong. In fact I said it does work on the street and that I'd run it myself.
Everyone needs to evaluate how they're planning on using their car and make the right decision for them based on all the information.
You never said how you used your car in your post. That's why I chimed in as the complete Ford setup isn't suitable for a car hitting the track.

I have the BMW setup, IMO, it's the right way to do it. 951 MC bolts right up. Brakes feel just like before the swap.

rekindling and old thread...

Cool but where do you get the adapter for the hydroboot to porsche M/C?

Re: Manual brakes with big reds
I chose the BMW unit for clearance issues. There is good info about this system in this form. I had no problems getting everything needed on line. and the cost was not to bad in my opinion. Just my 2 cents worth.

Re: Manual brakes with big reds
I second this. For the street I think a variety of setups (both boosted and not) work well. For a boosted setup on the track, BMW hydroboost is the way to go. They pedal feel is amazing in my opinion. It does require some serious attention to detail when installing to keep it from leaking, but boy does it scrub off some speed in a hurry.

What's an efficient way of sourcing the BMW system? Is there a parts list available? I consisdered it once but gave up at the time because the info I could find suggested systems from an older 7 Series and those were hard to find.

Re: Manual brakes with big reds
I found all my parts on ebay in about 1/2 hour. I purchased some new parts and a couple of used items. Even with the exchange rate and shipping it was cost effective. I will be using my gm PS pump that came with my acc drive unit complete.
