For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

C5 Bellhousing Differences Empty C5 Bellhousing Differences

Post  gt1scca Thu Dec 03, 2009 1:46 am

Here we go again...

The Corvette C5 2-piece bellhousing is a hot item these days. It seems there exists another C5 bellhousing that no one is sure about, and at one time it was thought to be an auto-trans bellhousing.

I have a GM #12551118 (1-piece) bellhousing for my LT1 setup. Inside dimensions are larger than the SBC bellhousing, so a 168T flywheel and 11.0" clutch will be accommodated. All the rage has been "The 2-piece design allows removing the lower section for component inspection and proper torque tube alignment"...

News Flash...

These bellhousings have been sold used with CRACKS in them. Are they worth the risk?
The early C5 bellhousing is a 1-piece design, but features a hulking 2" X 4.25" oval inspection hole @ the bottom. The 1-piece design is definitely stronger...Have you ever seen a SBC cast bellhousing crack (unless subjected to enormous shock load)? The removable lower section may be a nice touch, but it isn't worth much on a cracked bellhousing...

On to the big deal...

The GM #12551118 (1-piece C5 BH) will work with up to a 12.0" clutch setup, is stronger than the GM #12554980 (2-piece C5 BH), and is dirt cheap ($35 on eBay today).

Here's the drawings (drawn to scale, exported as jpegs) and pics.
Note that the #12551118 BH will require minor machining for the clutch slave hoses.

Greg,

You never cease to amaze me with the information and detailed drawings you supply! Do you ever sleep? I'm feeling a bit inadequate in the bellhousing area now. Laughing

Thanks Mike...

SLEEP?...Wa' Dat?
The first 3 months of Kyle-dom broke me from that!

Don't get too worked over about the bellhousing...

C5 Bellhousing Differences Empty BH Q:

Post  968gene Mon Dec 14, 2009 6:46 pm

Are the manual BH and the Auto different? The auto looks a great deal like the early one piece you posted (12551118).

Slightly...

My drawings are done to scale for comparison. As mentioned, the "Auto" bellhousing will contain a 12" (11.75" disc diameter) clutch assembly. From what I've seen, they are cheap, but lack the benefit of the 2-piece design.

The main benefit of the 12554980 (Manual) BH is only for inspection...
You can't remove or replace anything with it in place. The cast-in oval hole on the Auto BH (12551118) is for torque coupler access on the Corvette, but should serve as an adequate inspection hole for 944 V8 applications.

A bargain is a bargain:
This one comes with added strength.

C5 Bellhousing Differences Empty what am I missing?

Post  968gene Mon Dec 14, 2009 8:18 pm

It looks like the two drawings are labeled incorrectly. The shape of the one piece design is labeled two piece and the two piece, one piece. I'm thinking about going this way too. Anyone want to buy my two piece C5 BH? (complete with inspection cover bolts)

The drawings are (partial) cross-sections.

2-piece design is more of a "bell" shape than the 1-piece, but the inside dimensions are roughly the same where the pressure plate resides.

Post it in the For Sale section, and kiss it Bye Bye.
I get emails constantly looking for a line on a bellhousing...

WTB posts are popping up on CorvetteForums also.

C5 Bellhousing Differences Empty 5.3 vs. LS1

Post  968gene Tue Dec 29, 2009 5:15 pm

5.3 = much less expensive ($500?), most LSx parts are a bolt on so you can source parts inexpensively (LS1 intake is $50, TB $50, Truck ECU $75, etc.) If you are lucky, you can find an L33 or other aluminum 5.3 for cheap too. Can make 400+ HP easy.

LS1 = more expensive, (if cheap probably abused).

LS2, LS6, LS7 = more $$$.

Buy everything at once. Get the engine, harness, ECU (PCM), etc. etc.

Post  gt1scca Sun Jan 03, 2010 3:25 pm

To get back on topic...

Here's what I have learned with the 12551118 BH:

To use this bellhousing on a SBC / LT1 engine, a high-torque stater (SUM-820323-M) must be used. I bolted my 12551118 BH up to the '96 LT1, and the stock starter is now scrap. The stock GM starter nose-cone will not clear the bell, and the HT starter does not utilize the nose-cone.

The same starter problem will likely exist on the LS engine, but it is being verified.
For the 12554980 (2-piece) BH, starter design and location is not an issue.

Confirmed, and here's the fact, Jack...
The MSD starter will work.

MSD #5096

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

MSD #5095 (For the SBC / LT1)

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Other gear reduction starters will give similar results. The MSD starters were listed because of the P/N used for test fitting. No affiliation, of course...

(Thanks Mike!)

Old thread, I know... But have a question regarding the auto bell housings. I'm beginning my conversion, and looking for a BH. While looking at autotragic bell housings on ebay, I noticed they don't have the relief cuts for the slave cylinder hydraulic lines.

Is there anything else different? Is there enough material in that area to machine two slots for the hydraulic lines?

You can notch it. The problem with the 1-piece Auto C5 bellhousing is you can only fit a 10.5" clutch.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but a 10.5" clutch is max? The OP was able to fit a 12" flywheel, but maybe that is only for the SBC/LT1?

As far as starters, an OEM C5 starter should work just fine. No difference in part numbers between the auto and manual on Rockauto. GM loves to reuse parts between platforms.
