HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.
Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin
For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.
When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).
After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Intake choice
I've done some searching, but have not found anything specific to my questions, and therefore I am creating a new thread.
So I am running a LQ4 in my car, and understand I need to change out the accessories and intake to get it to fit under my hood. I believe that leaves me with the LS2 and LS6 intakes as my options. Now since the LQ4 in basically an iron block LS2, I am leaning towards that setup. But I am going to break my questions down by intake.
LS2 Intake
- Does the DBW TB setup used on the truck engines, mate to this intake best?
- Will the Injector Pigtails mate with LS2 Injectors, or do I need to retrofit.
- Are LS2 Injectors suffice?
- Will an LS2 intake fit under the hood with no modification?
LS6 Intake
- Were these ever used in a DWB TB combo? Or will I have to modify one?
- Will the Injector Pigtails mate with LS6 Injectors, or do I need to retrofit.
- Are LS6 Injectors suffice?
- Seems most people use the LS6 intake with no hood issues.
I ask these questions because I have a local shop that sells LS specific parts by the lot and they currently have a LS6 complete manifold with fuel rail and injectors. But they also have an LS2 fuel rail and injectors, but no LS2 intake.
TIA

LS6
Went with the LS6. Got the manifold, fuel rails and injector for 250$ Had it serviced at the injector store for 80$. Went to the junk yard and for $.50 got 9 pig tails (one extra just incase) and soldered them on.
All checks out perfectly.
The DBW TB from the LM7 motor just needed longer bolts to make it work. Otherwise really did not have any problems.

Re: Intake choice
the ls2 intake uses a 4 bolt throttle body, the gen 3 trucks use a 3 bolt throttle body. you would need to use an ls1 or ls6 intake manifold to use the truck throttle body.

Re: Intake choice
LS6 seems to be the route to go then - I will just grab some cheap pigtails and do the same. Would there be any advantage with getting rid of the truck TB if I went the LS2 route? Is one significantly larger than the other or no?
The stock LS6 injectors gave you no problem for the motor? Not sure what the stock lb's are for them.

Re: Intake choice
The Gen 3 vs Gen 4 intake differences usually are cathedral shaped intake ports on the heads & intake with a 3 bolt throttle body for Gen 3 vs larger rectangular intake ports on the heads & intake with a 4 bolt throttle body. The LS2 throttle body is also supposed 90 mm stock vs the LS1/6 being 75 or 78 mm stock .. opinions seem to vary. Also each will use different intake gaskets.
An LQ4 is a Gen 3 engine, and if you have the stock heads they will be cathedral port. As such, an LS6 manifold would be the correct choice and you would need a 3 bolt throttle body.
While it is possible to mix & match, the build is usually simpler if you keep everything within a single generation. There are differences in the block and how the engine gets signal information from the crank shaft as well, 24x vs 58x reluctor wheels and different pick-up locations. Creating a hybrid could take a bit of research.

Re: Intake choice
Thanks - Simple is what I am looking for. The motor came with 243 heads off a CTS-V so I am assuming the LS6 intake would then be best? Heads are cathedral ports as you noted.
The motor is a Gen III and unfortunately it has just sat since I purchased it last year... been focusing on the car too much ha. Here are the build specs:
-243 heads from a cts-v not milled, BTR .660 dual springs. heads have about 20k
-Ls7 lifters about 5k on them
-TSP 228R cam, has about 5k as well
-measured pushrod length for new heads and lifters, motor is very quiet
-f body oil pan for clearance
-rear main seal is new, along with front timing cover seal
-oil pan seal is new
-head gaskets new
-intake gaskets new
-ls6 valley pan (built in oil seperator)
-new knock sensors under the valley pan (preventative measure)

Re: Intake choice
I agree. The LS6 intake seems to be the logical option.
My build is an L33 with a few upgrades and I am also using an LS6 intake. I still need to order an LS6 valley pan. Otherwise I seem to be getting near the end of my parts list.

Re: Intake choice
I know it's pretty late to answer this... Originally, I had a 5.3 with catherdral port heads and tried to run an LS6 intake. With the LS6 intake, a 3 to 4 bolt spacer is required to run a DBW gen 4 throttle body. With this combo, I could no clear the hood. I switched to an LS2 intake and was fine.
I since switched to a 6.2L with square port heads and have an LS3/L76 intake. The 6.0 and 6.2L aluminum block engines are the only ones with square port heads I believe.

but not all 6.0l aluminum block engines are square port, the ls2 is cathedral port. the ls7 also has square port heads (if im not mistaken that port design originally showed up on the ls7).

Re: Intake choice
Oh yes, I forgot about the LS2, that is the exception. I think the LS7 has unique heads and intake as well.

Re: Intake choice
LS7 is the same as LS3. They share the same heads and block. Rotating assembly is different. These heads breath the best of all ls heads.

Re: Intake choice
LS7 heads require 4.100" bore or larger. The LS7 block has a 4.125" bore while the LS3 has a 4.060 bore. The intakes are also not interchangeable. L92, l76, and LS3 share the same heads. Except the LS3 has sodium filled valves. L76 and LS3 share the same intake.
