HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.

For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Best Trans for LS Swap!?

Turbo S is the strongest, and your first choice. Turbo unit is not as strong as the S, but still plenty strong for most swap cars. It's your second choice. The S2 transaxle is the same strength as the turbo box, but has less than optimal gearing for the V8. I run a S2, because that's what I had. Fun-fun-fun around town, but a pain on the freeway.

It depends on what your goal is with the car. If you are doing a lot of highway driving then the S2 trans is not good. It is gear much lower than the turbo trans. If you are all city streets and country twisty roads, then the S2 trans is fun.
I have a client that started out with the turbo trans, then swapped to an S2 trans. He liked the acceleration of the S2, but he did a lot of highway driving. So I have now put the turbo trans back in.

I have another client that started with an S2 trans and hated it. They bought a 968 trans and I installed it in the car. I find it is the best of both transmissions. It is low geared, but has one extra overdrive gear so that it does well on the highway as well as good acceleration from dead stop.

Trans Gears and Ratio Info.

You will see that the gears in the 968 are the same as the S2 except for an extra gear but the 5th is the same. The difference is the final drive (R&P).

Many use a 951 (Turbo) trans with a 5th gear from a NA. Make highway driving livable. Also, the turbo and turbo S transmissions are identical, and the inly difference in the them and the S2 is final drive gears. All of the mhave the hardened 1st and 2nd gears.

ive read mixed things on that. some say only the aor has the stronger 1st and 2nd gear, some say the aos/aot also have it. i have never read anything to support that the older turbo transmissions (5p, 5r, 9u uy) had the stronger gears.

Wish I could provide documentation. According to a gentleman on the FB 994 page, who rebuilds them, there is no difference in any of the turbos and the only changes in the S2 was gearing. I can get his name and contact info for you. He showed me several that he was rebuilding when I visited him.

from looking you wouldnt be able to see the difference, the gears are all physically the same to look at. all the claims say 1st and 2nd in the aor are shot peened. this process creates microscopic dimples in the surface of the gear, making the surfaces harder and more resistant to pitting. looking at them side by side you cant tell the difference.

kinda like cryo treating, you cant tell if its been done or not just by looking.
