HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.

Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin

For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

issue with p/s and hydro boost system Empty issue with p/s and hydro boost system

Post  hutchjc1 Mon May 09, 2016 6:41 am

Finally got the car started and moving and for the most part it went pretty well but I have the following issue, I have a very noticeable whine in the power steering pump, it is new from turn one and is set up with a hydro boost system, all of the parts were bought through TPC so it should have all of the restrictors etc. All parts but the rack are new and the brake part of the system seems to work fine. I used Redline synthetic fluid, it pretty much took a full quart and the level seems correct with no drops in the fluid with the motor running or off, and it was bled per the turn one instructions with the wheels off the ground and turning the wheel lock to lock etc. with the motor off at first and then with it running. The lines were routed like the schematic that was posted for the Mustang hydro system but there really isn't any choice as the lines will only connect to one place.
Has anyone had any issue with their pump ? Is there some other way to bleed the system ? Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated as I am stumped and don't want to damage the pump.

It took awhile for my system to burp, the PS whined for awhile and I had to add fluid several times until it finally completely burped itself and the whine went away.

I did some more research and from what I am finding I should be able to see the fluid moving in the reservoir and I didn't, apparently these systems are very restricted at the returns and I may have it connected to the wrong leg of the tee. At this point I have bleed and driven the car enough that it should be bled, I am worried about doing damage at this point. It is at the alignment shop this morning so I will go over the line connections this evening to verify the connection points. Hard to believe that it matters which leg of the "T" goes where but I will verify...
Thanks for your response, I appreciate the help.

I checked the routing of the lines last night and I do believe they are correct, I was able to determine that the noise is coming from the hydro boost unit and not the p/s pump. I had some help last night so I was able to bleed it a little better, I was able to see the fluid moving and was able to get some more air out of the system. One thing that I had not done before was to pump the brakes while bleeding, I turned the wheel from lock to lock a number of times but I had not applied the brakes, when I did pump them I did see some bubbles in the reservoir, it is getting better but still gets louder when the wheel is turned and or the brakes applied. I will look for a vacuum /pressure tester that will allow me to pull a vacuum at the p/s reservoir to help with removing any more air that may be in the system. Are these systems generally quiet with no noise coming from them ? Mine sounds like a regular p/s system that is low on fluid, it has a constant whine.....

You must pump the brakes to bleed properly. This is the only way to get the air out.

We are all learning something everyday. Manual pumping is by far the best way. Not a fan of the vaccum bleeder systems. They never work perfect. Old school is the best.

Yes I agree, it will be manually bled but with a vacuum pulled at the reservoir / cap, so you pull a vacuum and cycle the steering and pump the brakes, the vacuum is to help work the bubbles through the system as the only place they can go is the reservoir. Car gets dyno tuned Thursday so I want to have the hydro system as good as I can get it before the high rpms start ! trying to get things buttoned up for a cruise in / show in Ocean City Md. next week, they have roughly 3300 + cars registered for the event, we go each year and have not seen a 944 hybrid there yet, there was a very nice RX7 there last year it was really done well.

hydro boost require remote reservoir almost always.
Synthetic fluid won't foam as much as atf.
Type II pumps should have the orafice reduce to about 3/32 to ge the flow down to 2.2 / 2.5 gpm.
concept one has a spool valve kit you can use to shim the pressure relief valve to get the pressure where your system wants it (bmw, mustang, GM or custom)
If you have all the air out and you still get a whine, put a larger hose on the reservoir to pump.
Hope this helps
