HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.

For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Poor shifting Empty Poor shifting

Post  mr965 Sun Aug 16, 2015 12:35 am

I've noticed a few people had the same issues I'm dealing with and I have not found a solution yet.

LS2 swap with difficulty in engaging 1-2 and Reverse when hot.

Intermittent grinding shifting 2-3 and 4-3.

I just had new syncros done and a new Spec stage 1 clutch.

Currently have 7/8 Tilton m/c. XSChop short shifter. Also have swapped fluids from gl5 and gl4 with no improvement.

This would be a great track toy if it would only shift like my 951. Sad

Is there anyone with suggestions on what else to check? I have no hair left to pull out.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Remove the rubber inspection cover on the back of the torque tube bell housing (transmission side). With the car idling, have someone push the clutch down while you visually verify that the input shaft on the torque tube stops spinning. Do this with the car cold and hot. This will narrow down your issue to being clutch / pressure plate release, linkage or transmission.

I have a similar problem with First/second gears. I have a short shifter and I believe that its geometry is causing the problem. Shifts fine in 3,4,5 and reverse.
Planning to go back to a long shifter but I threw it away.

I do believe the problem has been diagnosed. The nub on the end of the drive shaft is worn and the pilot bearing does not fit snugly. This is time for a rebuild or replacement. I am fortunate enough to have found a local machinist to add material to reshape the nub to spec. I will be shaking the car down on Thur and feel confident this is the solution.

mr965,

Did the repair pilot diameter fix your problem? My shifting has been a little bit poor and "notchy" and I have been trying to pinpoint it.

Good information. I never checked the input shaft diameter in the pilot bearing. How well does a 944 shift normally? From everything I have read it seems they all shift kind of notchy. I have had my transaxle rebuilt and it didn't shift much better. Well, prior to blowing the third gear.

A 944 normally shifts a little notchy as in you will feel the gates. It is not at all like a Honda or BMW buttery smooth. Almost like a well damped American shifter as in an old Muncie Smile

Sounds like mine is fine then. Still good info. My spines don't fit the driveshaft properly, it will probably need to be rebuilt when the clutch needs replacing.

Mr 965 do you recall the clearances that were used for the adding of material and the pilot bearing?

The pilot bearing inner diameter is 15mm... The tip also needs to be 15mm; its a "slip fit". Not sure what your asking here?

mr965 said his tip had material added and turned down to spec, was wondering what his numbers were because he said his shifting improved after that repair.

Is this something a driveshaft shop can accomplish? Or a machine shop?

The typical repair for this is machining down the end of the drive shaft that engages the pilot bearing, then pressing on a sleeve to make up the difference. Infact i remember RockAuto at one point had one of these sleeves listed, i thought it was strange as its not something you typically see at any other major part supplier for our cars.
