For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Source for LS7 clutch disc? Empty Source for LS7 clutch disc?

Post  948inVA Wed Mar 02, 2016 4:40 pm

Hey guys. I'm trying to install the LS7 clutch kit on my car, but having some trouble finding a disc that will work. I've got the LS7 flywheel and pressure plate, and ordered a LuK 05-062 set to use the disc from it. The clutch disc is 23t x 1" but with a 11-7/8" diameter. The disc just barely fits inside the LS7 flywheel and it overhangs a bit on the LS7 pressure plate, so it would need to be turned down to make it fit (if that's even possible).

I've seen a Mcleod MCL-260123 and Centerforce 383946 which are both listed as 23t x 1" and 12" diameter. Problem is the diameter really needs to be no bigger than 11.5".

I checked my 11" conversion disc from TPC and the inside diameter is too small, so that's a no go.

Any suggestions?

The disc I put it was 11", IIRC. I know it was smaller in diameter than the LS7 disc that came with the clutch pack. I have been running it for about two years with no issues.

Do you know what brand it was or have a part number? I measured the inside diameter of my LS7 pressure plate at 6-3/4" and the friction ring on my TPC 11" disc is 6-1/2" on the inside.

SACHS Part # BBD4163 11 inch for 1970 Dodge. The clutch works fine but the splines fit a little looser than the Spec clutch disc I had on prior. If I were to swap it I would use the Spec disc for the tighter spline engagement.

Got it, thanks for the help! I'm kind of surprised more people aren't using the LS7 clutch on their conversion, but I guess it's just easier to go with the whole Spec setup and call it a day. Would be nice if TPC offered a custom disc for this setup.

That's interesting about the tighter fit with the Spec disc. I was under the impression the 944 and dodge splines were equivalent?

Well I compared the spline fit between my TPC 11" disc and the new dodge disc that I sourced - they are identical. So just to be safe I ordered one of the Spec conversion discs. I'll be interested to see if the fit is any tighter. At least it confirms my suspicion that the TPC disc is just an off the shelf dodge part.

That is BS if it is a off the shelf Dodge disc. I have had both and the Spec splines are definitely a better fit.

That is great info, thanks!

I currently have a Sachs clutch disk for my pending swap, and it is much thinner than the OE Corvette clutch disk, too. Probably no more than 2/3 the thickness via rough eyeball. And yes, the Sachs part number crosses to a large number of mopar applications. While I know it has been working for people, I'd really like something a bit more heavy duty. Can someone post up or PM me a part number for the Spec clutch disk? Thanks!

This is what Spec told me for the disc only.

For stage 1 use pn SF501-9-845L.

Great info, thanks! I had looked on their site but not seen just the clutch disk listed.

I already have a Corvette clutch kit, so did not need the Spec flywheel or pressure plate. Then I broke down and picked up a Fidanza flywheel. Perhaps I should just buy a Spec pressure plate & clutch disk combo & re-sell the Corvette kit.

Depends on what you want. I had a spec stage one clutch and took it out trying to figure out a vibration. The LS7 clutch is what I replaced it with. The LS7 feels like a factory clutch, the Spec clutch was heavy and difficult to drive in traffic. The Spec clutch has to be measured for a shim. The LS7 has a self adjusting pressure plate which makes for easier installation.

The 2004 GTO had a self adjusting pressure plate. Next time I may use that as it would be cheaper and the flywheel is lighter than the LS7 flywheel.

I was all set to use the GTO clutch when I first did the swap, but someone pointed out that the pressure plate had an interference with the C5 bell housing.
