HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.

Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin

For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

I saw mention in another part of a 928 5-speed fitting in a 944 with a pair of axles, but it looks from the pictures I've seen that the boot pattern on the bell housing a is different, too. Does this require mounts, torque tube and shifter modifications as well as axles? If they fit, why isn't it a more common swap?

You can mod your TT adapter plate for the extension tube/piece needed for the 928 coupler. After you've made a hanger bracket for trans to mate to factory 944 mount, then you can measure what length 930 axles you need (off shelf). The Early 944 cars are in luck because there are outer stub shafts from a vw that convert to the 930 CV pattern.
Having an LS1 mated to the 5-speed makes it a 3 speed. Now that my clutch is nicely broke in, It starts perfectly in 2nd, then usually 4th and 5th for daily driving. Third gear's been used a few times to walk away from some posers.

Did they change the design of the 928 transaxle at some point? All the pictures I've seen look like the diff is at the end, not in the middle like the 016 and 083. Do you have pictures of any installs?

That's generally the shift pattern I use in the 944 right now. It made jumping back into my Focus a bit of a shock.

The axles will set 2 inches rearward where the original axle outputs sat and the front 928 trans face and Torque tube clears the 944 torsion carrier. No one has done it that I've seen, but I have measured everything and know it physically fits. I just wish the Vette trans fit as easily as it does in the 928.

Do you have a measurement for what the CV angles look like with that offset? Is it still acceptable through the suspension travel?

2" back seems really short. That thing must be physically smaller than it looks in the pictures.

From 944 torsion bar to axle outputs is 17". It would be 19" on the 928 trans. The 930 axles And CVs are much stronger and allow more angle so the 2" backset is no issue.

Awesome. I may look into that instead of a 951 transaxle just for the gear ratios.

Another plus is the 928 TT & trans will drop right out, move rearward easily along with it' s torque tube for clutch changes and TT bearing r&r

So I'm obviously interested in this issue, since this is the second thread where I'm asking the same question, but that seems like a great setup. I've also seen that renegade makes and LS bell housing adapter. If you (like me) didn't think you were up to fabbing your own, would there be anything besides mount and 930 stubs that would be needed to get the 928 five speed in there?

The adapter I machined and still sell above is Only for an LS engine mated to the 5-speed 928 Torque tube, so that's what you would need up front. The CV adapter I make is also for an early car or one without the ABS outer stub shaft to be clear.
The 928 5 speed shifter mechanism is Easy to mod and make it move front to aft for positioning.
Where are you located? I sent out adapters for this exact swap a year and half ago but never heard back on the swap. I would like to see some one actually complete it.928 5-speed into early 944 IMG_20150518_203751_zps6gzznwba

I'll see if Dinsdale has any more input on this combo. He's the 928 king consultant. I'm not sure how the speedo would be driven. Also I'm sure you know that youll need a set of TPC LS-944 engine mounts. Avoid anything that sounds like "grenade".

I'm in the bay area. And I'm sure that this has been discussed, but is there problem runny the early pre abs stubs on a later, no abs model?

Yes, and from my experience, you can only use the 85.5-86 stub axles from the alloy arms because the spline profile matches the 87-up wheel hubs.
