HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.
Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin
For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.
When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).
After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

PSA!! I found a VDO Temp Sending Unit with LS Threads!
Hey guys,
Just got off the phone with a VDO Tech Service Rep...he actually called me back after our initial conversation to let me know that VDO makes a LS1 specific Temperature Sending Unit with a 250F temp range!
Ohm range is 287.4 - 22.7 ohms (the same as the 323-095 sending unit everyone uses with adapters), Ohm's at 190F (~88C) is 51.3, which falls nicely on the plot chart.
This sender may be a couple of degrees off, but doesn't require any adapters, drilling and tapping or anything like that
Part Number: A2C59517248-S
Available from Summit Racing, Jegs etc for right around $20!
I'm going to be ordering one shortly, and will be the guinea pig when I put my engine in!

Re: PSA!! I found a VDO Temp Sending Unit with LS Threads!
No problem guys! I knew there had to be a solution out there somewhere!
Hey Matt, this is not tested and 100% sure yet. All I know is what the VDO Rep told me: that this is a LS swap specific sending unit, made to thread into the LS blocks and hook up to cars using VDO gauges with a 250F range.
I have one on order, and will report back with my findings to make this a 100% sure deal. Until then, if someone wants to spring 20 bucks and beat me to it feel free, I won't mind ;-)
Cheers guys!

Haven't had a chance to fire the engine up yet...getting close to getting it running, just finished my wiring harness yesterday, but I've basically been stuck inside for the last 3 weeks while it rains constantly here. Update soon!

Re: PSA!! I found a VDO Temp Sending Unit with LS Threads!
Any updates for it working? I ordered one and I'm still waiting for it (q:9-1month summit racing) can the oem one from the ls1 be used while I'm waiting for my sensor?

Re: PSA!! I found a VDO Temp Sending Unit with LS Threads!
Quick update on this. The sensor appears to work correctly, the gauge reads exactly where it did with the original engine...however I have some gauge issues (unrelated) that affect the temp gauge, voltmeter etc. Going to go ahead and say that this is a plug and play solution. Woop woop!

That was the point of my research! I figured there had to be a solution out there in some fashion or other that would make it easier on everybody...hopefully this is the permanent solution!
Thanks,
Ethan

I bought one too. I'm probably a couple weeks to first start so I'm interested what you find!

Re: PSA!! I found a VDO Temp Sending Unit with LS Threads!
I believe you wire this sensor directly into the Porsche wiring if you are using the Porsche system to control the fans. In that case there is no need to wire the LS1 PCM- is that correct or am I misunderstanding something?
thanks for the sanity check.

That sensor is just a sending unit for the gauge on the dash. You use the LS ecu to control the fans.

Re: PSA!! I found a VDO Temp Sending Unit with LS Threads!
If you still have the Porsche rad and temp sensor hooked up, you could leave as is to control the fans.
You could also run the ecu fan "hi" and "low" wires into the temp sensor wiring so the ECU controls the fans.

Re: PSA!! I found a VDO Temp Sending Unit with LS Threads!
I do have the Porsche rad temp sensor hooked up so I think my fans will run off the Porsche system. That may or may not be the most reliable but it's easy (thoughts?).
I probably wasn't clear in trying to verify that the ls1 pcm does not use the cooling temp for tuning in any way does it?

Ya, the ls ecu needs a cooling temp sensor. You'll have two sensors one for the gauge and one for the ecu

Re: PSA!! I found a VDO Temp Sending Unit with LS Threads!
Thanks, that makes sense. There is a plug at the back of the passenger side head- is that a good location for the other sensor? This seems pretty elementary but I honestly hadn't seen it it this clearly, thanks again!

Re: PSA!! I found a VDO Temp Sending Unit with LS Threads!
I understand the sensor issue now, thanks for the help- knowing that there needs to be two, the advanced search shows what people have been doing. Before I knew it I was just searching the general topic ( using advanced search) and most were focused on one ( probably assuming the other).
I'm getting closer now.

I never knew this to be an issue. I've had that sender in my car for years.

Re: PSA!! I found a VDO Temp Sending Unit with LS Threads!
dsrracer, I use the stock 944 system to run the fans. the Porsche thermo switch is prone to failure so a lot of people remove it and run the fans from the LS1 PCM. but no problems on my car yet. and yes, two temp senders, one in each head, for the LS1 PCM and the 944 dash.
