For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

AGR / 083D Trans questions

Hello all,
According to the VIN and options data I had, my 1985.5 n/a 944 was supposed to have a 5S / 016K 5-speed transmission, so I had been on the lookout for a turbo transmission to upgrade, and have already purchased a transmission reinforcement plate.  However, when I pulled the transmission from the car, I find that the previous owner had been generous, and swapped in an AGR / 083D trans with LSD from the 1987 944S.

In my searches I have not been able to find a great deal about this AGR transmission, and I know that most people say the AOR from the Turbo S is the one to go for.

I'm building a 5.3 liter engine for use as a daily driver, with the occasional parking lot cone-dodging, so it's not planned to be a real fire-breather.

Does the AGR have the strengthening improvements that the Turbo transmissions got?  Does my search for a turbo trans need to continue?

The AOR is the only one with the hardened gears. Only the Turbo S came with that trans. My stock 5P held up fine top 2 years of track use without that stiffening plate. I just stayed out of the power in the low gears.

The AGR is between the N/A, and turbo trans in strength. For daily driving behind a 5.3 it's reasonable, and the price is right. Probably the biggest issue is that you'll find the gearing very short, and no LSD.

Thanks for the replies, I'm feeling OK with keeping this transmission, although I will see about finding a 37:27 5th gear swap for lower RPM on the highway at some point. I'll be pulling it apart when I do the reinforcement plate, so that will be a good time to do it.
