HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.
Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin
For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.
When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).
After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

944 s, possibly buying as parts car. need input
the shop i work for is able to buy damaged cars from insurance auctions. we came across an 87 944s im considering buying as a parts car (car is listed as salvage only, so cant rebuild it). my project is a late 85 944 non turbo.
first off, i dont know if its a 944s or 944 turbo s. the front bumper has been removed, there are no pics of the back of the car and no underhood shots. it does have the rear valance/under tail, and it appears to have the wide front fenders. past that, it has phone dial wheels, and no real distinguishing features.
ive got a few questions on specific parts
suspension- im wanting the later model suspension for high offset wheels as it makes brake upgrades simpler. either an 87 s or turbo s should have that suspension, correct?
brakes- what front calipers will an s and turbo s have? are they both 4 piston?
body work- does the 87 s have the same front end as the turbo? it appears to have the wider looking fenders, but its kinda hard to tell with no front bumper.
transaxle- i know about the turbo transaxle, but is there anything special about the 87 944s non turbo transaxle?
the car appears to have some mods done to it as well. from the few pics in the listing i see a very nice pair of recarro seats, a short shifter, an uncracked black dash, the rest of the interior is black. so right there is some value. the car is damaged in the front, however it doesnt look very extensive. unfortunately i cant go look at the car and its a silent online bidding process. im limited with the 5 pics they post on the listing and the limited info.
what do you guys think? assuming it is a non turbo s, do you guys think its worth buying for some better parts for my 85.5? thats basicly how we look at it in the shop if we dont know details, if we plan on it being the lower end model anything past that is a bonus lol. any other parts you can think of that would be worth swapping?

ok so re-reading some info i discover there never was an 87 944s turbo. guess i should do more reading before i post. forgive my stupidity, im still a 944 newb who really has only paid attention to 85.5.
so i guess its a 944s non turbo.

You can swap the entire suspension and convert to late offset. For the front you need the tie rods, struts, spindles, hubs and control arms. The rear you need the entire trailing arm, hub, CV joints..etc.
The 944S used single piston brakes, same as the 944. Only the 951, 944S2 and 968 had the 4-piston Brembo's all around. Note that if you want to go with the Brembo's and convert to late offset, you need the spindles from one of the above models i listed.. the 944S front spindles wont work.
Dimensionally the fenders are the same, but the turbo fenders have a slightly different shape at the front to accommodate the different bumper cover.
Price what it would cost you to source the suspension parts used and factor that into what you could get the entire car for. Its probably easier to do said swap with an entire donor car available, but cost might be prohibitive.

well, a local guy was selling the complete 87+ non turbo suspension for $500 (canadian) each end. that was everything i need. i figure a donor car might be a cheaper route in the long run if i can sell some other parts off. i figure if the engine is good its gotta be worth $750.
