HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.
Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin
For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.
When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).
After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

LSn? -You went to the dark side-
MK,
So, eh hem, you switched to an LS engine. Have you driven it yet? Why make the switch? I'm curious. I like my LT but as LS engines get cheaper, it would probably be easy for me to switch over... or will it. Will the LT bell housing work with the LS?
Anyway, why the switch (stinker)? Will it be that much better?

HAha. Yeah I switched. I got a bit bored (not driving it of course) and my uncle wanted to buy my LT for his project....so I sold it to him and bought an 08-09 LS3. I guess I just wanted to try something new. I initially thought it was gonna be a cinch. BUT, the RH bellhousing, although fit the engine nicely, would not accept the LS3/7 flywheel and there are no smaller diameter flywheels that fit the metric LS3/7 crank pattern. I could have bought a special conversion flywheel to fit this pattern but they want something like 400-500 bucks for it! I woulda bit the bullet and bought it but thought that the extra 1/2" diameter may help with the added power and the price for a used flywheel+pressure plate was 75 bucks at the corvette forums. So, I bought XSCHOP's adpater and the C5 housing.
If you can afford the $400 flywheel or get a pre-metric LS engine, yeah, the RH BH will work fine. The RH motor mounts seem to work fine so far. Thats about it at this point that Ive had to do differently. The headers of course are gonna be a PITA, but im not worried! ...think im gonna flex the mig muscles a bit with the headers.
I bet if I went with an earlier LS engine, Id be done by now.
By the time youre ready for an LS engine, Im sure there will be either a better price for the special conversion flywheel (greater demand:supply ratio) or some other solution for ya. Do you know how hard it is finding parts and material for the LS3 engines?? Its horrible out here. Theyre still so new that any aftermarket parts are expensive as hell or havent been developed yet.
Im still at the stage of installing the engine. I dont really believe that im gonna be super impressed over the LT. Its only like what... 120-140 HP? How much of a difference can that feel like? I kid, I kid. Im excited .... alittle.

Re: LSn? -You went to the dark side-
I am very jealous of your LS3. Wish I had the money to drop on such. Instead, like a couple people on here, I will be going with the aluminum block L33 5.3L motor. To my understanding, the L33 + a 04 LS6 cam (sourced for around 80-100 used) can net close to 320 to the wheels with a tune. Should be a great starting point for me at least.
Anyway, any clue on the differences between the LS3 and LS1 flywheel and clutch setup? Right now I kind of have a group buy for a pressure plate, flywheel spec'ed for the LS1, and custom 11-3/4" clutch disc for around 375 if you are interested. So far I have seen little interest, so I might as well toss it up here since you did go with the C5 bellhousing. If the LS3 flywheel is different, the company doing the group buy might be able to compensate for it.

Im not sure exactly when or why the LS series went to a metric pattern but thats what I have along with the stepped flywheel. Maybe all LS since 97 had metric patterns...not sure. Its all a bit muddy and im not sure Id care to delve into the research required to clear it up at this point.
If I hadnt already purchased all the required clutch crap, I would of taken you up on that deal. But then again, with a friendly clutch shop owner here in town that sells OE LuK and Valeo discs for 50-60 bucks, and people selling used LS7 flywheels/pressure plates for less than 100 bucks, its hard to justify paying upwards 400 for a clutch setup. I bought the LS7 flywheel and pressure plate with less than 2K miles on them for 75 from a guy on corvetteforums. It looked brand new, took it my clutch guy and he gave it to OK. So im happy for now. If it all goes crap, Ill let ya know though.

Re: LSn? -You went to the dark side-
This'll clear it up MK...
On the Gen I, the crankshaft flange (i.e. flywheel mounting surface) is .740” past the BH mounting surface on the block. The Gen III comes in at .340”, a difference of .400”. Now there are three small-block crankshaft flange bolt patterns; the Gen I (’55-’86, two-piece rear seal) @ 3.58” dia. / the Gen I (’87-’96, one-piece rear seal) @ 3.00”, and the Gen III (LS / one-piece seal) @ 3.11” dia. (with metric threads). No interchange there...BUT, McLeod sells a “conversion” flywheel for using Gen I components with the LS, part #460535 available from Summit Racing.
Gen III pressure plates are metric...bolt pattern and fasteners. The Gen III flywheel uses a metric bolt pattern for the pressure plate, and the PP is located by pins, not the bolts. The solution for this is the McLeod flywheel, which makes up the .400” distance differential at the crank, and allows using early SBC pressure plates with 3/8”-16 shouldered bolts. Otherwise, the LS flywheel must be re-drilled, and the difference made up somewhere else, say, the pilot adapter, in order to use Gen I components. On our (944) conversion, if the .400” is not made up, the clutch disc hub will destroy the TT splines...hence the 1” thick LS pilot adapter.
Yeah, I'm a broken record...

^ see.... I knew you said it before somewhere. Sounds familiar. Toooo lazy to search for it. I think what happened was I saw the price for that flywheel and was completley blinded. Set a new course for C5 housing immediately.
