HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.
Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin
For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.
When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).
After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Testing clutch/throw out bearing while engine out of car
Hi- I'm wondering if anyone has any tips on verifying the proper function of the clutch/TB release and engagement while the motor is out of the car and everything still accessible. Advanced Search didn't pull up any info that I could find-
Right now I have the engine positioned next to the car so that the clutch/TB are plumbed and bled.
Would love to confirm my set up I s viable before installing. Using a wilwood 13/16, TB from Eric, speed bleeder set up from Tick Performance.
What should happen when I engage/disengage the clutch pedal?
Thanks-

Factory or aftermarket flywheel and pressure plate?

Re: Testing clutch/throw out bearing while engine out of car
Thanks Xschop:
Spec 1 clutch and flywheel,
Bell housing from TPC.
No shim.
Everything is all bolted up and ready to go but thought I should try a and test
before installing. Just not sure how to test engagement and dis-engagement.
At first i thought it would be as simple as seeing if I could spin the flywheel when
the clutch pedal was depressed, but i'm beginning to think that is a
flawed concept.

Easy to understand your concerns.
I found a wilwood clutch pedal on eBay that was easy to bolt up to my engine (on a stand) to check out various clutch set ups:

Re: Testing clutch/throw out bearing while engine out of car
Nice job 944convert. To be honest I don't even know what I should be looking for when I test?
I.e. When you depress the clutch pedal this should happen,
When you release it this should happen.
I can visually see the throw out bearing moving when I depress the clutch pedal but how do
I now if everything is working properly?
It's my first clutch job

what are you using to keep the disk in place while your moving the throwout bearing?

its the disk that spins not the flywheel.

Re: Testing clutch/throw out bearing while engine out of car
You need a way to hold the disc in place, so basically a mock input shaft. A clutch alignment tool may work.
If you can rig something up to test the hydraulics, check for travel of the throwout bearing. I forgot what the minimum but you can look it up. The Spec setup sheet tells you what you need to know.
Finally check that the clutch disc pulls off both the flywheel and pressure plate. As documented in older threads some have had issues with the Spec hub being incorrect and pressing up on the pilot bearing. I have a feeling this might be the problem on my car..
Honestly i dont think there is much that can go wrong assuming you did the shim measurement correctly and you check the hub on the clutch disc is correct.

Re: Testing clutch/throw out bearing while engine out of car
Thanks everyone for the advice. I ended up grafting a length of pipe onto the clutch adjustment tool and using that to test the movement/clamping of the pressure plate.
All seems good. Clutch disengagement happens about 1/3 of the wall down the stroke of the pedal.-

Techno, was the hub anomaly ever resolved with spec? I'm in search of a clutch disc now and was interested in whether Spec ever resolved it. What the max permissible thickness of the hub to avoid interference with the pilot bearing? Depending on what part of the hub makes contact with the pilot bearing and how much force is exerted would dictate how big of an issue it could turn out to be. Are you hearing or noticing any unusual friction? Guess you'll notice wear when you get around to pulling the clutch.

Re: Testing clutch/throw out bearing while engine out of car
I did resolve the issue, it actually ended up being my pilot bearing adapter had walked out of the crank and was pressing up against the clutch disc hub! This was causing the disc to be pressed up against the pressure plate and continually drag even with the pedal fully depressed.
With everything reinstalled the clutch has been working great, the spec stage 2 is quite forgiving even in traffic. I am pretty satisfied with it.
