HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.

Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin

For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Hi
Well everything was going well with the build until we came to fire it up. The starter went in but wouldn't turn the engine. It appears to jam. Starter works out of the engine and the engine can be hand cranked.
Engine is an LT1 350 1995 from a Corvette. I've fitted a McLeod flywheel and starter ring with 153 teeth - the flex plate had 153 teeth. The stock starter motor failed trying to turn the engine so we’ve fitted a replacement which goes in but won’t turn the engine.
Has anyone come across this situation? Is it usual to utilise the stock starter motor with a flywheel instead of a flex plate? Does the starter need more power because of the weight of the flywheel?
Please help as the project is stopped and cannot continue until we resolve this. Sad

Thanks
Q

What bellhousing are you using? Pictures of the starter installed, looking up? Pictures of the starter nose and recess in the bellhousing area where the starter nests?

Hi 948
I'm using a RH bellhousing but we have pulled it back so we know it is not fouling. We now think that the starter motor is misaligned as the pinion goes in and jams half way into the flywheel ring teeth.
The flywheel is a McLeod 153 teeth. Thanks Q

Now that we know you are not using a closed nose starter, which doesnt fit in the RH bellhousing.... I would guess that you need to shim the starter down, which is very common with SBCs. You may even have the shims in the box the starter came in. See here [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
They come in various sizes so that you can set a 0.02 inch gap between the teeth.

Thanks 948 - that seems to be the answer. Will post an upodate when we've had chance to try it.

Hi
Thanks for all your advice - we have now shimmed the starter motor, not just down but out as well and the engine now cranks. A small oil leak from the oil filter housing has stopped play at the moment but after that is replaced we can go for first fire up. Hurrah!
Cheers
