HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.

Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin

For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Off Topic: The engine swap haters!

Post  Techno Duck on Fri Mar 28, 2014 10:03 pm

Not exactly technical, but everytime i read the posts from the haters it causes me to face palm...

It took some self control to not call out the BS from this guy again, ive decided to just let it be Cool .

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

"i looked closely at a V8 swap, but it would have taken about $50k to do it right, and in the end i would have had a wannabe vette, with no value whatsoever, and would have lost all that made the 968 what it is."

"as for the TRUE cost of a V8 installation, you have to include the increased brakes, suspension, frame reinforcement work, strengthened torque tube, larger axes, reinforced transmission, electronics, cooling, wheels, tires, and all the other stuff required. it adds up in a hurry. if you fail to do these things, you end up with a rattly uncivilized pile of crap. been there, done that."

and some other highlights from my build thread, some of the suff is laughable. I really love the quote i put in bold!  Laughing

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

"but, to answer the questions asked:

first off, it's about 100lbs heavier than the 968 engine, even with the bang zoom all aluminum motor he used, not 40 or 50. you have to factor in all the other stuff that goes with it, not just the engine. not the end of the world, but definitely threw off the balance.

as for driving poorly, everything about the way the car drove was a mess. tons of power in a straight line, but useless. the chassis couldn't handle it. everything that made the 968 what makes it what it is, was lost. it felt like an old vette.

the hydroboost system SUCKS!. you have no sense of the car stopping.

the engine has too much torque for the torque tube assembly. you can feel the shaft flex. really nasty feeling, but you wouldn't know it unless you were familiar with what it is supposed to feel like.
the clutch was incredibly insensitive, and you couldn't use first gear at all (and he was using the turbo box). the chatter was horrible. he used the bang zoom stuff too.

basically it spent every dime to do it right, took it to the leading expert in the country on these conversions, and still ended up with a bucket of bolts."

I read some of his posts on your Pelican build thread. He either drove a conversion that was done on an already junk car prior to the conversion or he is lying. There is no reason changing the power plant would create all the issues he described. My wife drives my car in traffic with no issues at all. She didn't even notice the manual steering and brakes. People that don't know what the factory engine bay looks like can't tell the engine isn't stock.

Hey Techno Duck,
I also followed this and...damn.
I find it "mind bottling" Laughing

I can only assume that this is the kind of guy who knows everything with out doing any research, has to have the "best" of everything even if it isn't the right thing and went to a guy who was happy to believe "the customer is always right, as long as the checks clear."

I think that is why I enjoy doing it myself.
If something goes wrong, I'm the idiot who did it.
If I don't like it, I'll change or fix it.

That guy has no one to blame but himself.
Sad and funny at the same time.

Amen Brother. Multiple times I've threatened to fire my mechanic when things have gone wrong at the track. Wink

As for haters, there's really no place to insult a build. Suggestions and constructive criticism are helpful, but 'I think this because that guy said such and such' isn't useful.

The guy who constantly trashes the conversions said he converted ,at no expense spared, a 968 himself along with several other swaps over the years. Yet, he never posts any pictures of said cars. I call BS.

Wow.

I just took a look at the traffic today and in the words of Ron Burgandy "that escalated quickly!"  Shocked

I'm starting to think it has nothing to do with the LS swap anymore.

If he were smart I think he would simple say "sorry, I'm afraid we have to agree to disagree".

He is entirely missing the real reason most of us do this, to make it what we want.

The cop outs - if you want a Corvette you should just buy one or if you want more power you should get rid of the 944 and get a 911 - aren't even a part of it.

I don't want a Corvette or a 911. They are very nice in their own right, don't get me wrong. If I wanted one I'd have one - just like everybody else.

It's the body, the lines and the art of the 944 that I want. The first time I saw a 944 I knew I would have one and now I want one that is mine. With 400hp or so.
Not something anyone with the money can go and buy from a dealership.

I do agree that there are the craptastic craigslist and ebay swaps out there. Fine.
DON'T buy them.
Isn't it really that simple?

I have been reading that guys posts for years, he is totally full of $#**! He has a reputation within the 968 community, look up some of the old threads on Rennlist if you love internet forum drama.

It's not worth getting upset about these guys. They know everything  Rolling Eyes and you will never change their minds.

I wonder what they would think about someone putting a Corvair flat 6 into a 912. This was pretty common with the early 912's. This originated with a guy named Ted Trevor. If you don't know who he is, he was the guy behind Crown Engineering. As in Crown Corv-8 -- the first mid engine Corvair kit. Or Hobert Kennedy -- as in Kennedy Engineered Products. This guy was the first to make v8 adapters for VW and Porsche transaxles and is probably the most used adapter for Porsche transaxles now. Swap guys are what got Hot Rodding started to begin with. In the 50's there wasn't much you could do with most cars to make them faster so guys started swapping engines. When the Ford Flathead came out it was THE engine to have. Just imagine, swapping a heavy flathead just to get 60 HP.

Isn't swapping how the American Muscle car came to being? Of course it wasn't crossing brands but it was still engine swaping.

You will find bashers in every form of the car hobby. If it isn't swapping an engine, it is not keeping the car absolutely stock. Or god forbid, you paint your car a different color than original.

If you really think about it, cars were invented by guys that did this kind of stuff so we are just continuing with tradition.

Everyone that wants to trash a LS conversion have no ideal about them other then seeing a picture in a magazine or Ebay and so on.  The ones that say they have built one or a dozen and say they're junk are full of BS.  They can talk all the trash they want because they are a anonymous entity on the internet.  The one thing I hate about the internet instead of one on one in person is there is allot of people that are so full of BS it's not funny!  It's so easy to say they have a 930 while they go out to their car and get into a beat up Ford Pinto.  I have seen it and I have called out a few on another forum that I use to be a regular on.

So it's best to just politely bow out of any conversation with any of those guys.  It's fine not to like the conversions but I wish they would talk REAL facts and not a bunch of BS.  I'm not sure but didn't Carol Shelby take a european car and stuffed a Ford V8 in it and made a monster.  Oh yea, I think the name was the Cobra!

Also Porsche has been toying with a V8 in the 911 platform.  RUF has a proprietary designed V8 they have built for the 911 platform.  But it's a bad ideal because they make the car a piece of junk.  I wonder were they got the ideal from.  Maybe the good o'l boy's here in the states that have been putting V8's in Porsches for the last 30 + years.

There is a set of 4 video's on You Tube of a red 944 with a LS and it's tearing up everything on the track.  I guess that's because the LS made the handling terrible, lol.  Your NOT going to find anyone that has honestly checked out and driven a well built conversion and say it's a piece of junk.

Rich, I have a feeling he's talking about my videos.  Search "docwyte" on youtube and you'll find them...

I'm currently having a "spirited" discussion on my build thread on Rennlist about how the LS motor is more reliable for heavy track use vs the stock turbo motor. The guy I'm arguing with is actually my friend who has driven my swapped car, albeit only on the street for a small amount of time.

The video's I am talking about are from "Tony Garcia" at the California Speedway.  Below is a link to the first video of a multi part set from his race.

This is a link to his website, if you scroll to the bottom of the page he has a ton of video's of his car.

Ah yes, Tony's old car. Those videos were part of the inspiration in building my car. Hopefully we'll have video of his new car on track soon, the engine is the least impressive thing about it.

Unwilling, or unable, that is no reason to trash talk one of the best conversions for these cars! I love the reliability and can't tell people enough how more confident I am driving this car!
