HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.

For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Time to start my own build report.

Project. 78 euro 928 with 220 000 KM on the clock.

I used as a summer car for couple of years doing some upgrades (S4 brakes, new eibach springs and Bilstein dampers) and then got crashed on a track day.

Right hand B-pilar and door was damaged...again as I found out it had been damaged allready before in the same spot.[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

After that decided to do bit more than just fix the damage and things got out of hands. Car was in my dads carage for five years untill last November I got it into my own carage and actually started to work on it.

Here is how it was when arrived. Some stripping work was done.

Here we are now with the engine gone and waiting for a new one...still wondering which one to choose.

I am trying to do most of the easy bodywork my self, mainly getting the straight panels sanded down and primed. but that is so boring so today we started to build a lightweight aluminium dashboard and also get the seat position right. (so the driver is safe and can also reach the switchgear in the dash.

And WE means me and my son...and here he is trying out the seating. it was too high, need to cut out the factory mounting points.

The 5-speed kit arrived and I gave them a wash and a light coating.

Goal of the Project is to get a streetusable track car. Risk is that as the laws around here are so tight it migt end up being a racer.  A 5,3 LS would be more safe choice for street car but then again if the car is going to be a racer a 6,0 would be better choise in case of wanting more power...
Full roll-cage the semicage in pictures will be sold out, buckets seats and safety fuelsell. Electricst all replaced (not Porsche part). no huge wings, aim is visually look "old" not a modern GT racer. so the Turbo twist wheels will go too and will be replaced with the older looking OZ Futuras. (at the back in the picture)

More will come as I go...

I am glad to see you are still going to be able to enjoy your car.  It looks like you have a quite a bit of work ahead of you.

As someone who has been through the process of starting with track days, then moved to time attack and finally has done some racing, I have found that trying to build a car that's good for both road use and track use is very difficult.  Good track cars are not very much fun for road use, and road cars always feel compromised on the race track.

I would recommend thinking long and hard about how you plan to use the car, and then deciding if you want to build a road car or a track car.  Then build it to be the best you can for for that use.  If you try for both, each will feel compromised and the car will be less fun to drive than it could be in each situation.

I know its going to be difficult to get it working nicely both on track and street.
Mainly I aim to get a track car which is street legal..not good at street.

I am still 50/50 on this in what to do as the one important thing is that if I want to keep it street legal there will be some considerations on the modifications and can not go all out on the build.

I am not aiming to build a huge time attack monster, more like a track car what it might have been in 70`s if it was raced.

But you are right that I need to think hard on my desires as I know that some things I could do more easily if I decide to build a race car. Electrics for example...

Finally thing is moving a bit...

I got the drivers seat mounter and did some stripping. I removed the original seat mountings and boled new mountings to the floor. The seat is now lower and sits further back than the original. This causes some other adjustments to be made but I have planned it this way so its not an issue.

Now the car is allmoust empty, still have the wheels on and steering rack but those will come out soon to get the bare body and start repairing the damaged B-pilar and some rust issues.

I got the cluch slave cylinder ordered and with a bit of work got it to ready to be mounted to the adaptor plate, seems to fit nicely. Next step is to continue with body work and try to find more parts.

Pictures will come soon as there is something to show...

Slow project- Street&Track Empty phew...this is like the church in Barcelona

Post  attes Sat Jan 07, 2017 1:44 pm

Finally had got some time to do something about the car...
I have started the long way and now the car is all in pieces. ok for some reason the steering wheel is attached but that is it.

body has been sand and soda blasted and painted with epoxy primer. Now I am fixing some body repairs.

Took all controll arms to pieces and cliened them up. I am putting in new bushings. Nowadays you can get Powerflex bushings even to lower control arms. Those I think are not meant to be taken a part or at least it seems so as it is really hard to do.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

As you can see...still a way to go. Parts need to be cleaned and painted.

But I hope soon I will be in a phase, where I can start putting parts into the car..  well easy to say as there are no parts in it...

After the body work I will be sending the chassis to be fitted with a rollcage.
Also decided to go corvette all the way, so putting corvette transmission into the car, with some LS engine. Its going to be raced so the standard 928 transmission will not be able to handle that.

I found out that the car has been painted several times so also took all the paint away. maybe I just clearcoat the front fenders...

Hard part was that there was no chemicals on sale (good ones which would do the job) so I had to do it mechanically...meanin sanding it out. It sure takes a while. I tried every one commercially available stuff which I could find but the 30 year old paint did not let go...

Doors are the same now and I am thinking of not painting those, at least leaving some aluminium to be visible. Nowadays you can get clearcoat which can be put directly to metal surface. Dont know how well it lasts but this car is not going to be driven everyday so it migh last for years still.

Methylene chloride will bubble it right off.
I believe you have the earliest version 928 with bolt on axles. So the axles are easy to convert.

in Finland it seems hard to get any paintremower etc which has that on it. You can only get weak stuff.
Its not allowed to sell any stuff which Methylene chloride.. so the weak stuff is no match to the old paint.

I think it easy to find rights parts for the old rear axle, just find the right CV-joint axle combos, or right CV joints and make the axles to fit.

Pontiac GTO CV joints have the same bolt circle than 928..I think.

928 flanges are indeed 930 CV size.

If you mod your rear weissach like this one it will bolt to trans in different location than my original mount and you have less welding to do....
