HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.

For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Is it possible to install an LS1 engine into a 944, not changing anything about the cross member, instead build a low custom oil pan, and in the end, be able to close the hood?

I read somwhere on this site, that in order to close the hood, the engine and cross member must be lowered. Is that really true? What is stopping the hood from being closed?

I have a straight six in my 924, in the original engine height. I think I have a little under 1 inch clearance = plenty Very Happy

    I see.

So if one took the time to build a new intake manifold, it was possible to install the engine in the original height and leave the front suspension unchanged.....

But off course, the cathedral ports on the LS1 are quite difficult to fabricate, so the solution could be to find a carb intake manifold(aluminium) and modify that one.

Or you could modify the hood to provide the additional clearance you need.

I thought I remember lots of people not needing to space the crossmember down the 1/2", or at least keeping the spacers to 1/4" instead.

Post  Gutterboy Tue Jan 21, 2014 9:33 pm

so if went the body work route for the hood which let me avoid the spacers does this mean i wouldn't have to mess with extending the steering shaft by the extra x amount with some borgesen joint or whatever that i was reading?

if this is true sounds like the bodywork on the hood with adding a nice little reverse muscle vent could help with airflow as well as save some other fabrication that i would be less capable at.

The brake master also gets harder to fit if you don't use spacers.

I'm running mine with no spacers and stock hood.. manual steering and hydroboost. You need to trim the hood brace and grind some material off of the throttle body. The steering shaft does not need to be changed.

even if i am running a power steering setup with the ls1 factory pump connected i wouldn't have to extend the shaft if i used no spacers right?

it's when you use the spacers that you have to extend the shaft if i understand correctly?

also, as per your footnote details on your '86 951, since you have hood pins did you end up deleting the hood latch to also make room for the throttle body with not using spacers on the block?

No hood latch. It also depends on your throttle body. I'm running a FAST92 throttle body and I had to trim away the hood to get it to fit *with* spacers.

The headers are also designed to work with spacers, so they may not fit without them.

When I did my straight six swap(in my 924), I was very anxious to find out if it could be done without dropping the crossmember and/or adding a bump in the hood. Fortunately it could. I would just like to change as little as possible to the car. Because it's an inline engine, I can even keep the original brake booster.

If I was going to do a 944-LS1 swap, I would also try to fit the engine, with original hood and no changes to the crossmember. Well obviously an LS1 would not fit without replacing the brake booster with hydro boost. And I have doubts that I can pass MOT, where I live, without the original booster. Maybe the car will have to be tested and certified by some kind of institute.

I have done a couple without spacers by moving the TB to a different location.
