HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.
Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin
For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.
When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).
After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

GM Dealers are no help...
I called 2 local dealers...NADA. They don't know, not even LS2 FW specs.
I also searched LS1Tech.com, LS2GTO forums, and several others...LS2 / LS7 flywheel diameters are listed only as 12 3/4" - 14" dia.
I have the GMPP Performance Parts Catalog...All internal specs are listed, but no flywheel specs.
The GM #12571611 is the only FW listed as interchanging on the LS2, LS3 & LS7.
BAM has a copy of GM #88958786 / "High Performance Chevy LS1/LS6 V-8’s". It MAY shed some light...

Re: LS clutch diameters
The friction plate from my Fidanza flywheel (part #198571 C5 - Camaro, Corvette, GTO) is 11.7" diameter. My Centerforce II clutch disc (for a Plymouth Roadrunner with 383cid) is 11", if that helps any.

Re: LS clutch diameters
Im gonna go with that 12571611 FW. I guess ill wait until I get the FW in and measure it? I was kinda hoping that it would be a 12" to make all this transition worth the trouble.
Thanks guys.
Thanks guys.

GM Parts Direct has other good deals also...C5 BH is cheapest there, unless you can find a good (i.e. no cracks) used one.87-944S wrote:Damn, kicking price on that flywheel!

Re: LS clutch diameters
I just picked up a C5 BH for 150 shipped from a salvage yard in the midwest somewhere (dug it up on car-parts). Funny thing is it's very clearly brand new. They're out there.

Yeah. I just got one from ebay under weird search terms. It was like brand new as well. I painted mine aluminum and then clear coated it! Looks like a million bucks! Paid 75 too... yee haw.

Alright....I have on good authority that the LS7 is 12 inch. Waiting for a confirmation from a dealership via email.
14" woulda been trouble finding.

Re: LS clutch diameters
How about this kit and the McLeod disc (which I've seen for $125)? It's still a waste to buy a whole kit and not use the disc, but the parts would be new, and I need everything that goes inside the bellhousing.

Re: LS clutch diameters
I bought a brand new LS1 Camaro clutch pressure plate for 50 bucks from tha-bay to match the Fidanza Flywheel ($225) and Dodge truck clutch disk from Autozone (40 bucks). Yes, I know it is not a high performance disk, but should easily handle whatever the stock 5.3l will throw at it since it is designed for a much bigger motor.

For ~120.00 more you can get the LS7 flywheel and clutch/PP all new from gmpartshouse.com.
EDIT: Didnt notice that it comes with a flywheel. Pretty good price...

Re: LS clutch diameters
Yeah, comes with a flywheel. Aftermarket one-off parts cost a fortune (like the Fidanza fw). I keep looking, but it seems that a complete clutch kit, ditch the clutch (how funny is that), and then the CP4018 from Autozone might be the most cost effective solution for a stock ls1 build like mine, assuming everything fits. Then on to the clutch hydraulics..

Re: LS clutch diameters
2005-06 6.0L corvette engines used an 11-1/2" disc according to Sachs K70411-01
2005-08 6.2L and 7.0L corvette (as factory) uses the LuK discs and are 11-7/16" Part number = LuK RepSet 04-216
Heres a picture of a factory stock LuK 2008 LS3/7 corvette clutch disc which is 11-7/16...
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
So I guess im looking for an 11.5" clutch disc with 23 splines and 1" shaft diameter. Anyone know where to find this disc? Pretty much all I can find is a 12" 1x23 spline that may fit as is or I can take it to the clutch shop and have them cut it down. Hopefully it just fits as is!
Hope this helps someone else!

Re: LS clutch diameters
Are you guys sure that the Chrysler/Dodge related 1"-23 spline clutches will work on our input shafts? Is anyone actually running such a setup as we speak? I am talking to someone at Gripforce right now about a kit and he is telling me that running one of the above clutches will not work and custom will be required. He's pricing a custom disc at around 115, which isn't too bad. I am trying to work some kind of deal into this kit I found, hopefully they can provide an easy enough kit for us.

A couple of friends and I have been using Gripforce for BMW clutch parts for quite some time now and everything out of them has been top notch. I'll keep you guys updated on a kit price and more information.

I spoke with those guys, although I started with the C5 version of their offering on ebay. I asked about it, and eventually got the following email (spelling errors theirs):
gripforce wrote:We can included the disc that works for the 944 (23 splines, 1-1/32" spline dia.)
Let us know if you need anything.
Thanks,
Gregory
My vernier caliper says the shaft is just UNDER 1", so when I saw the 1-1/32" size mentioned I gave up on them for now. I'm not quite ready to buy the clutch, so I didn't pursue it further, but their price was quite good in an overall sense for fw/cl/pp combo. Let us know how you make out.

Re: LS clutch diameters
Alright, I have heard back from Gregory at Gripforce.
I think that's a great price, especially being an 11-3/4" OD disc, which should easily hold the power of many of our setups.
As far as I know, the shape of Chrysler input shaft is different from Porsche input shaft.
Since they have similar dimension, Chrysler disc may fit but it will NOT be a correct fit.
Which means, there is a chance for premature failure down the road.
Also what type of release bearing(from LS1 or 944) are you planning on using?
It's your choice to go with Roadrunner disc but I wouldn't recommend it.
We can provide the LS1 flywheel, pressure plate and custom 11-3/4" O.D. disc with
Porsche hub 1"-23 splined disc at $405. Let me know if you have any more questions.

Re: LS clutch diameters
I'm in for that deal, provided it fits in the C5 bellhousing style conversion I'm pursuing right now. The L33 motor I'm going to get is definitely an Auto, even if it isn't I'd rather have a new flywheel.
I wonder if they'd do a discount for a group buy.

I'll ask him about a group buy. I too am going with the L33 and stock C5 bellhousing along with Rob's adapter. I don't see why this setup wouldn't work, it's designed to work in a normal C5 anyway.

Re: LS clutch diameters
Alright guys. Gripforce is willing to do 375 for the LSX pressure plate/flywheel/custom splined clutch combo if we can get 5 or more people to order. I guess I will start a list here.
