HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.

Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin

For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Taking over a stalled project, first question Empty Taking over a stalled project, first question

Hi folks, I've lurked here a long time, a few years now and this is either my first post, or at least one of the first. I hope you don't mind a question, I did do an advanced search first.
1984 944, 98 LS1 from an F-body. There has been a lot of work done to it already, I'm going to finish it up. That presents a problem in that I have to research what was done and see if it is correct before proceeding. My first issue was the steering intermediate shaft. I went to hook it up to the manual steering rack and, by my estimates the shaft is about an inch too long. The overall length is 10 1/2" long, the shaft itself is 10 5/8" long. I don't want to cut and weld it, I'd rather use one that fits, or buy one with a slip joint. Do you know what shaft I have, and is there one that'll fit. The subframe has been lowered, looks to be between 1/2" and 3/4", forgot to measure. Sorry.

I have other questions, but I haven't searched the forum so I'll hold off.

Thanks folks.

There are two different length intermediate shafts for the 944. The one for the manual rack is longer than the one for the power rack. (don't have the measurements in front of me, but with this you can search it out) Make sure you have the correct one for what rack you're using.

Taking over a stalled project, first question Empty Re: Taking over a stalled project, first question

Is your cross member in its stock location or have you dropped it?  If dropped need to add that drop into the length.

If you are looking for a slip joint shaft look at Borgeson shaft (cut to fit) # 450024, it is a 1" DD on one end and 3/4" DD on the other.

Need to get u-joints too, Borgeson # 014928, 3/4" DD x 11/16" 40-spline and the other end is # 015228, 1" DD x 11/16" 40-spline.  For the 1" DD x 11/16" 40-spline you need to call and order it as it is not listed on their website.

If no desire to have the slip, Borgeson also has a solid 3/4" DD shaft for a cut to fit as well.  Need to get two of the #014928 u-joints.

Yes the Borgeson items are pricey but they are good quality.  If you go this route remember to do some dremel work on the u-joints to get the full movement.

Hope this is helpful

Very helpful Tehone. Thanks. Yes, the stock subframe has been dropped, looks like 1/2 inch, forgot to measure. That's why I was surprised that the shaft could still be 1" too long haha.

Taking over a stalled project, first question Empty additional question to steering rack shaft length issue

Post  Gutterboy Wed Sep 18, 2013 1:45 pm

haven't started my project but will be soon as procuring all known peices is almost done thanks to admin and xschop!

but my question is if i plan to retain the existing steering assembly that is on my car already the way it was factory; and then i drop my crossmember to fit the ls1 as per admin's kit i will end up having to do this shaft mod cause it could be too short?

my car has factory power rack of course and intend to use the ls1's power steering pump and reservoir with all other porsche steering assembly.

Thanks in advance for the info on what i am missing here.

This is what I did. My spacers are a 1/2 inch. I scribed a line on the shaft and cut it. A piece was made for a 1/2 spread with a hand fit with center line scribed. Drilled and tapped for through pins test fit and welded. I have power steering, this is original shaft

Taking over a stalled project, first question Empty Steering shaft

Post  gdopnt Wed Sep 18, 2013 9:58 pm

Almost forgot one problem I had was the upright bolt. I turned it around so it would allow the steering knuckle to rotate. Then the bolt was in the way of the alternator so that was easier to correct than blocking the knuckle.

Thanks gdopnt. That'd kinda what I had in mind. I have a welder, but that doesn't make me a welder so I think I'll take it to a buddies house for that. I think I'll put the sleeve toward the top or bottom of the shaft to avoid fitment issues with headers or other components.
On that note, time to tackle the headers now.....

My headers are the long tube and after the motor was mounted.... I had to unbolt and lift it to get my headers in from underneath also the starter had to be set in place because it wasnt going in after.
