For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

IMHO miles are irrelevant, its how the trans as driven and maintained. Do you know any of the cars history? Is the trans original to the car, rebuilt, etc?

Where are you located? I have a LSD turbo trans (trans code 5R, with cooler) from a street driven '88 I'm looking to sell. Car had 108,000 miles when it spun a rod bearing.

an idea for getting approx mileage would be to ask for the VIN and buy the Instavin report for $7 to get the mileage off the vin. I do this all t time when buying an engine from salvage yards as they do not always represent the actual mileages.

you do have to remember they only give info if some one give it like a repair shop , dealer , insurance co. .

years ago i owned a honda delsol the was hit real hard in the ass that totaled the car . the person that hit me did not have any insurance , drivers license nor was the van registered so because i did not have full coverage with my insurance co on the car . i ended up clipping the back half from a bone yard back half . i then drove the car for another 5 years untill it was totaled again from this kid that tried to steel it from infront of my shop one night . little did he know i was in the shop so when i ran out the shop door with a gun in hand he floored it into a tree totaling it .
again i clipped it with yet another back half and again paid for it my self . that car has a totally clean carfax and instavin report . so if it's not reported it's not in any report .

in my 944 SBC car one of the trannys i use for racing has well over 175K miles on it the odometer stopped working at 175k and i drove the car for years before the motor crapped out . that trans is working just fine . because of gearing we do change out the tran to the tracks we run it . and now i change the trans fluid every 3 events on the trans .
so it is not the miles it's the maintenance on the trans that's important .

Ok so as long as its been cared for it will last. Thats what i figured as most manual transmissions are bullet proff.

at the end of the day, I agree with 962, it is how you maintain it. But if the car went 175k, ask if they have pics of the car, the engine and interior, I picked up a car with 162k the other week and it was mint inside and out, a garage baby, well cared for. Trying to determine the condition is like a treasure hunt, look for clues that can provide you some data points to reduce your risk.

Mileage, pics of cars condition, car fax and instavin reports, # of owners, ask for references from the seller (how did they use it, drive it), age of driver, male or female, shop records. The more anal the owner, the better i like it. I tend to think out of the box when I want to really get to the bottom of things, and am usually surprised at how much information people will provide to make a sale.

kind of feel the person your buying from . just like vorsche said if they want to sell it they will offer up all the info they can .

the 016R trans i bought for my LS7 car i did not have a good feeling that the guy was up front about it but i bought it any way it turned out i was right it would pop out of gear . so i pulled it back out of the car and did a rebuild on it . the good thing is they are not that bad to work on and parts were not to bad cost wise . the sad thing is the LS7 motor put out way to much torque for the trans any way and i broke the case getting on it at the start of a race . that's when i did the 996 trans swap

ok and now that 996 swap sounds very interesting, what all does it take to get one of them to fit in?

if your thinking of sticking one in a 944 chassis for get it ! the car it's in is a tube chassis car i built in my race fabrtcation shop .
how ever the 1st thing is you have to turn the trans around and flip it up side down . then it comes to the oiling the oil pump for the cooler have to be modified and the cooler lines have to be changed to pump the oil in and out of the trans as they are now on the top insted of the bottom after you flip the trans .
then there is the drive shaft and torquetube along with the bellhousing to the 996 trans . they all have to be fabed to mate up to the 996 trans as they are to long you have to cut them shorter and make a belhousing plate .
then the shifter is totaly different from the 944's . you have to make all new cables as they were about a inch to short . and you need the 996 shifter it's self as that too is totally diferent .
then the half shafts they have to also be changed . the 996 ones will not fit into and chassis of the 944 as the wheel track is not the same .
this is why i just built a totally new tube chassis i kept the wheel base the same as the 944 but used the track front and rear of the 996 . the wheel base is only 50MM longer on the 944's the front track is 2MM wider on the 944 and the rear track is 64MM wider on the 996 .

996 wheel base 2350MM
996 F. TRACK 1455MM
996 R track 1500MM

944 WHEEL BASE 2400MM
944 F. TRACK 1457MM
944R. TRACK 1436MM

INSTED OF USING THE 996 CROSS MEMBERS I built the pick up points into the chassis it's self .
i then used the 996 uprights front and rear and built my own control arms front and rear upper and lowers .
by building my own control arms i then can get finer ajustments in the suspension setups for the track .

i now use a 6 speed sequential quaife trans with paddle shifters and not the 996 trans any more .
if i were to build another tube chassis i would have done that right from the start as it's a better trans and with the paddle shifters there is no cables to deal with .

i was planing on installing the 996 gear box in my sbc 944 over the winter as i have all the pars from the ls7 tube car but i have to cut the rear floor out and build all new rear suspension as the trans will not fit with the torsion bar type suspension . but i did change my mind on that as it's not worth all the work it takes . i only changed the 944 to the 996 gear box because the 994's gear boxes can not take the power of the LS7 motor . the sbc motor only puts out 405 hp and 428 torques and the stock 944 trans can handle that little bit of power all day long . even the stock v8 trans can handle that power as long as your not into doing burn outs and i don't because i use the 944sbc for 12 and 24 hours races and if you do a burn out coming out of the pit box you get black flaged and made to do a drive thru pit lane or they will do a stop and hold for one minute .
i also changed my mind on the 996 trans in the sbc car because i want to keep the car simple . the more crap you do to the car the more things can brake in a long race . the sbc car has a fiberglass nose so over the winter i'm also going to do fiberglass doors . i have to keep the qtr's metal along with the roof by class rules . now the tube car is all carbon and glass as the rules in that class state you can use any metarial for the body as long as it has the body shape or style as the car looks from the manufactor .

so is the 996 gear box worth installing i a stock 944 chassis not just NO but hell NO !
