HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.

Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin

For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

86` 944 turbo project Empty 86` 944 turbo project

Post  86turboshell Sun Dec 24, 2017 2:10 pm

Hello everyone my name I Gabriele I'm 21 living in south Texas. Just found a Craigslist add for a 1986 Porsche 944 Turbo model, the car itself is a shell with a 10 point roll cage welded in. Besides that there are virtually no parts other than the stock steering wheel. Asking for some guidance/help on what I should start sinking my money into parts wise first.
Thank you all for your time and input!

86` 944 turbo project Empty Choosing your Porsche 944

Post  Porsche951toLS3 Tue Dec 26, 2017 1:48 am

I am not an expert, but considering you are 21 asking this question you should pass on the car.
At the very least, you should find a car that is driveable and well taken care of. There are so many expensive parts to this car that if you don't start with a basic running and driveable car, you will swim in the costs. I have an 86 Porsche 944 Turbo that was running and driveable when I bought it............looked great, but the nickel and dime of all the repairs (It had 160,000 miles) soon added up. We kept the car and I am just finishing the conversion to a LS3 corvette motor.

In short, I LOVE THIS CAR. If you don't have the money to put into it, you will hate the car quickly. If you start with a well running car that someone took care of, you can still get them for a decent price. From there you can work on what you want to repair or upgrade.

I hope this helps and it is only MY opinion. If you get another opinion..........well.....we all have them.

The link below is an LS3. It's a 6.2L engine. I also posted a link below to the LS engine wiki. It's very useful in determining LS engine models.

Like the other said. You would be better off buying a running car to build. Would be cheaper in the long run. A bare tub will nickel and dime you to death.

If you have your heart set on building this shell, I'd suggest buying a wrecked 944/968. If you can find one with body damage but intact suspension, you'll get what you need to turn your shell into a roller. Otherwise, you've got a nightmare ahead just in sourcing the correct fasteners.

its a tough thing to start with just a shell, but not impossible. the big question is what do you want to build, a full race car or a street car? fully caged cars are a pain on the street imo, and if your not going to race it its not worth building.

a few other things though, is this a freshly caged car or is it an old used up race car? if it is an older race car the biggest question would be why it was is it torn down and not still raced. if its been crashed and fixed a number of times it could be a real mess. i it is a freshly caged car why was it never completed? i have seen the odd car get part way through a build and they either find something wrong with it and stop, or the work is done poorly and they decide to cut their losses and run.

the decision really hinges on what you want to build yourself. if your wanting a street car it would be best to find a complete car, either a running driving car or something with engine damage and start with that.

The plan is to turn it into a reliable endurance race car that can be street driven as well to car meets and dignights.
The previous owner stripped all the parts to put them on another shell apparently the rear fender wells is where the X-brace of the roll cage is welded. The metal is thin and the weld doesn't look sturdy and the inspection would not pass besides the rear xbrace welds to rear fender welds nothing is wrong

if its your first car i wouldnt do it but other than that i started off with a running base model 944 now im doing the LS1 motor swap ( old motor died on me) but other than that if your serious about going the LS route consider getting a daily driver.

+1 on buying a running car (even if it just barely runs). This allows you check a lot of other electrical systems on the car that can be a pain in the ass later. Literally the only thing I wish I would have done differently with my build. Good luck!
