HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.

Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin

For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

oil pan leak Empty oil pan leak

Post  epsylon9mm Sun May 19, 2013 8:52 am

i am a little bummed. i have everything up and running including a great tune but i have a weeping oil pan at 2 spots when the car is warm/running. one just above the oil in and out in between the oil pan bolts and the other at rear on the driver side about a inch right from the little oil pan bolt. both leaks look to be between the pan and the gasket not the gasket and the block. i think my pan must not be 100% flat.

when i installed the pan i only used a little rtv on the block at the corners and where the timing cover and rear cover meet the block.

how has everyone else done the oil pan?

i really hate to have to pull the motor when i have everything setup so nicely. is it possible for me to just drop the pan with the little room i have above the crossmember and cram rtv between the gasket and pan using a putty knife where i have these leaks?

What car and motor are you working on?
Are you using a stock aluminum oil pan or Sheet metal after market pan?

The car is a 78 928 5 speed with a 5.3 LM7. The oil pan is part of the renegade hybrid kit for the 928. I can see that the lip of the pan is deformed at the rear bolt where one of the leaks is occurring. The other leak is coming out where the lip of the pan is reinforced for the oil in and out so I can not see any irregularity there.

I used a 1 piece felpro gasket. The car has only really been driven once for tuning since converted. The rest of the time it has been run at idle in my garage while I worked on finishing the exhaust.

I have not seen any sheet metal pan that is perfectly flat, Most are a little distorted, but they will bolt down flat and seal just fine. The only real problems have been the tips of the corners being turned up a little. Just a quick tap with a hammer usually fixes them. That being said, the area around the oil lines on the RH pans have leaked a little in the past on a couple of 944's that we have done using their pans. I just install a bolt in the very edge of the lip and it usually seals up just fine. If the other leak is in the area where a bolt hole is missing in the block you can make a angle iron bracket to span between the other bolt hole to help support the pan seal in that area. If it still leaks then your calling them and hoping they will/can help....

I bought a used sheet metal pan that was not straight at all. Did some pounding, but still leaked. I then did the angle iron trick and it has not leaked a drop since.

this sounds promising. what thickness metal do you use for the angle iron? i assume you want something relatively thick so it can apply an even force acrros the lip between the bolts it is spanning. do you use any rtv on the angle iron?

1/8" thick should work fine, RTV is not needed as the angle iron is just backing up the pan flange and not the gasket itself.
