HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.

For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Anyone else have a leaky H-valve?

Post  Arthropraxis on Sun Nov 18, 2012 8:00 pm

I have but two heater H-valves in and they both have leaked the metal plunger. Both have been new units, is there a brand that is better than another?

Just curious, where is it mounted? I don't have any street time on mine, but I paid too much from RH many years ago. No idea of brand, probably a cheap copy of the GM piece.

It is in the same place as the others that I see. Up front as far away as it can get from the headers. It doesn't seem to be a heat issue. It drips intermittently with the heater off and stops with the heater on. No way to tell if it leaks while I am driving. Not a big deal but it is annoying.

That would drive me nuts! I was asking about location since I am redoing my heater hoses, wanted to see what you did. Smile

These valves aren't unidirectional, are they?

I don't know if they are or not, but take a look at this valve (also at Rock Auto for $38)

Not sure if the metal construction would make it less prone to leak, but thought I throw it out there.

Thanks, I may try that one. I looked at an AC delco part and it looked exactly like the one on my car, probably the same part renamed.

I ordered one to take a look at, it is directional and seems to be well made, and has what looks like a nylon ball valve. I'll keep it and use it.

It drips intermittently with the heater off and stops with the heater on.
I just noticed this AM that I'm having the same problem, except it's a lot more than intermittent with the heater off!

Also, as of all of a sudden last night, I can't regulate the heat when it's on - regardless of how I turn the heater control knob on the dash, the heat is on lava-hot.

I think my H-valve is dead. Which is weird because it's basically brand-new, I replaced it less than a year ago when the previous one cracked and fell apart...

Acorad, check all of your vacuum connections. I had one fall out and it makes the valve fail in the open position.

Thanks Anthro, turns out it's the infamous plastic heater clip under the driver's dash. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

My car has some temp sensor bad on the passenger side under the glovebox. I can hear a click then the heat comes on even if it is off. It will click again and go off. It intermittently cycles back and forth or I can manually turn the knob full hot then back to off and it clicks off. Completely separate issue than the leaking H-valve which now is more that just dripping.

If anyone else has this issue with the leak, I may have found a fix. I removed the vacuum diaphragm, washer and o-ring under it. I filled the hole with gasket maker, put the o-ring back in with the washer on top, added a washer from another h-valve for compression and reinstalled the vacuum diaphragm. It hasn't leaked in a week. It probably will now that i said that.

For that clicking noise, there is a known problem with a plastic or nylon breaking in the heater assembly that makes a click, not sure if that is your problem or not. Saw a few articles on a fix in Excellence or some other mag a few years ago.

That click i believe is the solenoid for the automatic climate control. My n/a used to go bezerk clicking sometimes on cool nights with the heat set to max, if i turned it just before the max setting it would be fine.

The heater clips are all intact, as far as I could find. The fan that sucks the air from the grill in the dash next to the clock is dead or dying. At times it sounds like a tree frog chirping in my dash.

Metal Heater Valve

Post  fliermike45 on Tue Jul 02, 2013 10:09 am

I finally got rid of the leaking plastic heater valve and installed a Autotemp H4956 metal heater valve.

Very nice. My plastic one broke in half on the way to work one day. The metal ones are the way to go.

Here is where I put my metal valve, the heater hoses run through the wheel well and exit on the other side of the shock tower. I used aluminum tubing for the runs in the wheel well.

I bet the plastic clip inside the cabin, under the drivers side console is broken causing the valve to be wide open. This will cause both the A/C and heat to be on at the same time.
