HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.
Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin
For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.
When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).
After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Exhaust smell in cabin
I need to pick the collective brain of the folks here. I have a persistent exhaust smell in the cabin of my 951/LS1. I replaced the rear hatch seal with a new one but I still have exhaust getting in some place. I cannot see any gaps around the hatch where it meets the seal. Is there anywhere else that exhaust could be getting in? It makes driving the car stinky and my clothes smell after I take it for a spin. besides that I don't want to be overcome by exhaust fumes and pass out!
Where else should I be looking for a leak? TIA.

How well are the clutch, brakes and wire harness sealed on the firewall? Do you have cats? If not, the exhaust can be more smelly. Someone recently had a thread about this issue and fixed it by extending the exhaust pipe about an inch past the bumper.

I certainly could do a better job of sealing the wiring harness against the firewall. The brake and clutch masters should be OK but I'll run a bead of RTV behind them to be sure.
No I don't have cat converters, I suppose I can look into a high flow aftermarket cat and at the same time get my exhaust guy to extend the tail pipe a bit.
Thanks for the help.

Re: Exhaust smell in cabin
Check the shifter hole. But as arthro mentioned, more than likely the exhaust tip is too short and needs extending.

Re: Exhaust smell in cabin
Mine sits just a little past the bumper. Try sealing the firewall and shifter tunnel as mentioned. If that fails then lengthen the exhaust, that would be the easiest route. BTW, nice welds on the exhaust tip.

Yeah, too short and I bet its a bit loud too. Anyway, heres a google image of how far you might want to extend it.

I'll address the firewall where the harness enters this weekend. I'll make an appointment to extend the pipe too. Yes its loud but damn does it sound sweet at 5k rpm in a tunnel! Re. the welds, I wish I could take credit but that's not my work. The guy who did my exhaust is an artist with the welder - see below.

Re: Exhaust smell in cabin
I have had similar issues with an exhaust exiting before the bumper. It may sound inconsequential, but check if your taillight housings are sealed to to the body. If its not the hatch seal, chances are there is some other leak nearby (turbulence at rear of car).
Is it more or less evident at speed?
If less; could be near firewall.
If increases w/ speed could be aft-firewall.
Double check there is 0 gap in the hatch seal near the key hole. Just my 2cents....
I hope this helps. I'd like to see you resolve this!

Re: Exhaust smell in cabin
I had a lot of exhaust in the cabin in my 944. Took awhile, but I found the leak. One of the license plate lights was damaged and exhaust was getting in. Doesn't take much of a hole in the rear of the car to suck exhaust in, expecially with the sunroof raised (creates vacuum). Look for any holes or gaps in the back of the car or hatch seal.

Re: Exhaust smell in cabin
Thanks for the tips kachunk and Jet city. I did check the tail lights, they were very well seald to the body with lots of black goo. I only took the drivers side off, it took some effort to get it out. I resealed it by heating up the existing sealant and also added some black RTV.
The car is at the exhaust fabricators now to extend the tail pipe and add a high flow cat. Part of the problem is my car is pretty stinky too so I'm going to try a cat and then get someone with HP Tuners to look at my tune at idle, it seems to be rich there. When I get it back I will look into the license plate lights too.
