The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

help with codes p0171 & p0174

Post  948inVA on Sun Nov 04, 2012 4:06 pm

My ECM is throwing these codes - p0171 & p0174 which indicate a lean a/f mixture on both banks. Anyone have any ideas what it could be? I'm wondering if my fuel pump isn't putting out enough pressure, or I need to have the injectors cleaned. The engine idles and runs fine..

Could be a leak in the intake tract after the MAF sensor.

Squirt some brake cleaner around the intake, pcv hoses and vacuum ports to see if you have any gasket leaks and tighten up your header bolts . I did this and found leaks, sealed them up better with hose clamps and new intake gaskets. The car ran much better with a decrease in an annoying vibration around 3K RPMs.

Check vac hoses everywhere. Throttle body, manifold, etc.

Thanks for the ideas.. maybe I forgot to tighten a hose clamp somewhere. Hopefully it's something simple like that.

Be careful spraying anything flammable around a running engine.

One errant spark can ruin your day.

Make sure you have something close at hand to put out a fire...jus' sayin'

The PCV hoses themselves get old and crack.

I got those codes recently and I had a loose hose clamp just behind my MAF.

Think I found the culprit.. my fuel hose between the tank and pump had cracked and I had done a quick fix with some regular fuel hose and a curved hard line stuffed inside. Forgot to replace it with the oem hose when it came in and it must have been causing a restriction!

Well I'm still getting the same codes. I've sprayed carb cleaner around all the vacuum connections with no effect. Anything else I should check?
