HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.

Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin

For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

I'm new to this forum, but very interested in an LS1 conversion of my 84 944. Would like to make contact with others in California that have done a conversion and what was needed to pass smog.

BigAl, (thats what my family calls me too)-

I am just north in Temecula. I found out that the easiest way to get by emissions is with a 94-95 LT1, but I know some others have done it with the LS, it just requires more work. I am doing mine myself, so that influenced my decision quite a bit- that and cost. I have yet to really get going, just amassing parts, should get started in earnest once I get my tubular crossmember from Admin, which is contingent on me getting him the outer tie rod end that has been sitting in my door pocket since Saturday so he can make the bump steer kit for it.

So nice to know I'm not alone

Post by BigAl on Fri Jun 04, 2010 8:08 pm

thanks for the reply. I do periodically get up to Temecula (my sister lives in French Valley) and would love to see your project and share ideas/thoughts on LT versus LS and especially what smog glop I will need. I don't mind more work, but cost is always a factor.

My 944 is still stock and running good, but I come from a long line of hot rodders and I just gotta plaster some rubber on the pavement...

Keep in touch,

Absolutely, good luck on your project. Basically, you have to carry over ALL smog equipment from the host vehicle in CA, after 95, it gets a bit tougher. I'd have to go back to my notes for exactly why, but after talking to Dawgz, it was a simple decision.

Basically, the new engine needs to be from a car, and everything related to emissions that that engine had on it the day it left the factory must still be on the car after the swap.

iow, sawzall the exhaust pipes of your donor car aft of the rear O2 sensors and everything in front of your cuts must be retained in the swap.

It can be done.

I've just moved to San Diego from Canada and done my own conversion early last year, the car is still in Canada but I hope to receive it later this year. I also have to convert my car to pass CA emissions but can drive it for while before dealing with that task.

NorCal who needs help?

Post by Winter44 on Tue Apr 10, 2012 5:12 pm

Just joined this forum. I am in the east bay area and would be down to help anyone in their conversion as it is a plan for me down the road. My 2.5 is great right now and will last as long as I need it to. But for those NorCal guys that are doing a swap, if you need an extra body on the weekends I am there. I figure any experience I can gain will help me out in the future.
PM me so we can get in contact.

Dan

i understood that parts have to have an E.O. number for CARB? so does that disqualify TPC headers?

Yes, I do not have a CARB number for them. I'll get it done when someone wants to pony up the $50k that it takes for testing. Shocked Laughing Laughing Laughing
Anyone??????

I'll try to get a definitive answer from CARB. I've read -on other sites -the EO is a must have and I've read a lot of folks have no problem.

While I think it's smart that you're doing your homework, this is a pretty well-traveled road. Yes, the EO# is required by CARB. Now, when you bring your finished swap to a CARB referee, whether he actually looks for the EO# or not is another story, though you should expect that they absolutely will look for it.

San Diego conversion starting...

Post by mrmartini101 on Sat Feb 20, 2016 11:34 am

Just starting a conversion, here in San Diego. I'm just getting things together and because it's going to be a street car, yes, the smog issue.
Any info on streamlining the process would be greatly appreciated.

Thanx

Just like everything else in California it depends on who you get and how they are feeling that day. I did mine in Northern California, but here is what my sticking points were:

1) All smog equipment has to be on the car like the original, that means in close to the same location (Catalyst)
2) Sadly, if your conversion is OBD2, you will have to duplicate the evap emissions. This typically includes fuel level sensor, evap pump, etc. SOME referee's have required the actual fuel tank from teh donor car, but I would just find another referee.
3) Airbox is a sticking point, even though there were no smog related things on it in my case, I had to speak with the referee's boss to get approvals.

No, the conversion is not that hard but you just have to present your car to the BAR the way they want to see it.

The key is that motor emulates what you say it is, I chose a 2002 LS1 Camaro.

I am in Carlsbad.
