For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

I've done a lot of searching, but the info is a little overwhelming to me lol
I'm looking to have a fun street car that does the occasional autocross. Probably no DE's since I have a real race car.
I guess I'm trying to figure out the options.
Hydroboost or manual, right? I've seen BMW and Mustang setups mentioned. Will either of these work better with a 86 951 system? How about manual brakes? Are they not recommended?
Any info would be great. Sorry if I'm missing something obvious.

I have a dual master cylinder setup with a balance bar using factory late model Turbo Brembo calipers. The manual system works great and I have no complaints. The brakes are progressive and easy to modulate a low and higher speeds on the street.
That said, I am switching to hydroboost. Power brakes build to maximum PSI quicker than manual brakes and that time can decrease the stopping distance in a panic situation. That is a necessity were I live, these people must have learned to drive on a video game.

When I first converted my car I upped the calipers and rotors to the then xschop recommendation.
Boxster rotors/Lexus LS 430 Calipers on the front, Porsche rotors/Mazda RX7 Calipers on rear.
I fitted a Willwood dual tandem master cylinder as per sloan's book.

Brakes worked OK but pedal effort was high even with a redrilled and bushed pedal.

I then installed a Mustang Cobra Hydraboost system with the Ford proportioning block and the difference is like night and day, low pedal effort and the brakes will put your face in the windshield.

For road use I would highly recommend the HB.

Thanks for the info, guys. I guess I still need a custom plate to mount everything.
I believe I read that 2000 Mustangs work. Any other years?

Any of them will work that use a large mounting bolt on the back. They will need to be at the same angle as the power brake booster was to work with the factory pedal, 12 degrees.
Just so people who read this later don't get confused. The dual tandem brake MC is not the same as a dual MC setup with a bias bar. The tandem setup is like the factory system. The dual MC uses on MC for each circuit and adjusts front to rear brake bias with a balance bar. The dual MC works much better than the tandem system. So HB > dual MC w/bias bar > tandem MC.

Another vote for hydroboost. I just finished my conversion about two weeks ago and it's unbelievably better. I have the stock 951 brakes and they're fantastic with the hydroboost.

To correct a comment above: the angle only has to be 12* if you mount the hydroboost in the same spot as the original master cylinder. Otherwise, what really matters is that the push is linear. I mounted mine down low to clear my strut tower brace and it wound up at almost 0*. When you watch the plunger go into the hydroboost unit, it's almost dead-on the entire way. That's what really matters!

I'd prefer to use the stock brakes. What unit did you end up going with?

Good to know, that will make it easier to build a mount. Did you have to modify the firewall opening to mount it lower?

I used the mustang hydroboost.

@Anthropraxis,
No, i was able to mount the hydroboost at the very bottom of the existing hole. What i did was:

-Made a new plate for the firewall
-Cut a rough-sized hole in the firewall plate down near the bottom of the stock hole in the firewall
-Made another plate that bolted to the hydroboost and bolted it up to the hydroboost unit (using the stock nut)
-Put a solid tack weld at the top of the hydroboost plate to hold it on the firewall plate
-Got inside the car, down near the pedal, and watched the 'throw' on the pedal. I then moved the hydroboost up or down accordingly (since only the top was tack welded).

The down side is that i had to buy a new set of valve covers since my PCV was in the way...but if you scoot yours over to the driver side a little you won't have that problem (i couldn't scoot mine over because i have some clutch stuff in the way there).

BTW: The nut on the hydroboost is a bear, and it requires a special socket. Don't buy the socket, use an air chisel. I welded a blob onto the nut and used the air chisel on that, but it probably wasn't necessary.

If the accumulation canister could be clocked 90 degrees so it sits straight up would the MC clear truck coils? There is an adapter that will correct the MC to upright.
