HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.

Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin

For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Anybody else here have problem with exhaust fumes getting in the cabin with the windows down? I can drive just fine with the windows up, roll them down and you get gagged .No my exhaust does not leak, it has been pressure checked, and the 4" muffler tip sticks at least .5" rearward from the back bumper.

Check your rear hatch seal. I have seen a few cars that have a one inch gap or so right above the key hole where the two halves come together. Other seals are just shot and dont seal anymore. There is a weird venturi effect / vortex effect that happens with the exhaust getting sucked through the hatch. Had this problem on both my 8v 944 and 951. Replacing the seal on the 944 and adding an extra piece of insulation to fill that 1-inch gap on my 951 fixed the problem.

I certainly am. Doesn't seem to bother me on track but on drives around the neiborhood I get to feeling pretty sickly. I'll have to look at the rear hatch seal.

Yes, been there done that. I parted out a few 944s a couple years ago and kept a hatch seal. I cut pieces out of it to fill gaps on my cars. My trunk lid seal is in good shape and the latches are adjusted for a very tight shut. No leaks in the body, no leaks around taillights, no leaks in exhaust. Windows up the car is stink free, lower them down and prepare to die.

I have a bunch of 944s and they all exhibit this air current phenomonon to some extent, but man... a 5.7 makes ALOT of exhaust. I wondered if any other v8 guys are having the same trouble. I am almost considering side pipes to put the exhaust in the air stream instead of in the vacuum behind the car.

Before cats my car was intolerable to drive in traffic. Now, with cats, it is as unnoticeable as any other car.

I drive with the windows down all the time with no cats. Everything is fine to me. It might be that Dynomax VT in the rear though.

I dont think so. I am using solid aluminum gaskets smeared with ultra copper. With the engine at idle you can stick your face over the headers on either side of the motor and inhale deeply and all you get is hot air.

If you are certain that your hatch is completely sealed you may have a problem with where your exhaust outlet/outlets are. They need to be behind the front edge of the bumper and it is also a good idea to exit straight back with out turn downs.

If the hatch leaks anywhere you get exhaust fumes in the car. You can check it with strips of newspaper. Close the hatch on strips a couple inches wide and then try to pull them out. If you can pull them out you have leaks. If your hatch seal is intact (not missing pieces) all you need to do is bend the pinch weld up a little to get a total seal where ever the strips of paper come out. You need to do this around the whole hatch including the top by the hinges.

If you have turn downs on your exhaust in front of the rear bumper (under the body) you will get exhaust fumes from anywhere there are any small air leaks. Such as around the fuel filler neck area, the sunroof drain tube grommets, even around where the wires pass through the body for the fuel pump. These cars pull a slight vacuum from inside of the car when you have the windows down so anywhere there is an air leak you can get exhaust fumes.
I have been driving these cars since 1981 so I have dealt with most all problems that you can have.

I will try shortening the exhaust tip a little. There are no leaks in my hatch. A similar thread to this one exists on 924.org posted by morghen. I believe that the conclusion was reached that the exhaust tip placement was crucial to having clean air with the windows down. People were saying that ejecting the exhaust to the side is very effective. I just dont really like the look. I think Also I should have gone with an muffler tip cut at an angle rather than the one I got. Oh well, its not like I dont work on the thing every night anyway...
