For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Rubbed through the coolant over flow hose at the track Empty Rubbed through the coolant over flow hose at the track

Post  docwyte Sat Apr 21, 2012 3:10 pm

Sprung a leak this morning at the track. Right after the 1st session of the day, I pull into my pit, go to pop the hood and see steam coming from the left front wheel, followed by a water fall of coolant.

Towed the car home and it's the hose that runs from the passenger top port of the radiator to the coolant over flow tank. The old hose dipped down from the top of the radiator in a "U" before coming back up to the coolant overflow tank. On the downward dip, the fan was hitting it and eventually rubbed through.

My question is, do I need to keep that downward "U" bend for any reason? I can easily route a shorter piece of hose and completely bypass the fan. Unless the U bend is there for a reason?

TIA!

Sorry to hear about it, Doc. So, the reason you've got a u-bend in a sink drain is to trap some water and keep air from coming up from the sewer into the bathroom. So, by the same token, the u-bend in the feed hose from the expansion tank could make sure air go back the steam vent instead. But, at least on my car, the steam vent line does just as dramatic a u-bend down to the frame rail.

Not much help, just musing. Good luck.

Not a big deal, at least it didn't spill on track where I or anyone else would spun on it. I have it out of the car and ready to replace, just need to know if I need to route it the same way.

Just change it out, it must have been old and saggy. Every one I've seen goes straight across.

Hey Doc. Im not 100% sure of the hose you are referring to but I think its this one?

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

If so, this hose is a radiator main fill hose from the expansion tank. It has that "dip" or "U" shape to clear the headlight bar. They couldnt route this hose above the headlight bar because the intercooler hoses were already there.

So, I would replace it as you see fit if... 1) you no longer have a headlight bar or, 2) if you can route it better. You will see no adverse effects and will actually be better off if you can keep it above the top of the radiator.

Hope this helps.

Turbo cars would have had the aluminum coolant pipe ( 8 ) that runs across, behind the radiator and makes up part of that line. I tried to reuse mine but it hits the LS1 PS pump. Either way I don't think you need a trap for the line, it should always be full.

Show me a picture, I don't think the "U" was there for any reason that I can remember.

I've got the hose out of the car now, I'll try to mock it back into place and take a picture of it. 944 LT1, that's the hose, but on my car it was routed differently, with a large U going down the drivers side of the radiator, then back up to the coolant overflow tank.

Looks like the stock hose didn't have that U bend in it, so I'm just going to get another length of hose and route it differently and away from the fan assembly.

Well can't route it the way I'd hoped to, the headlight mechanism will hit it. Eric, looks like you routed it the way you did to avoid the headlight bar. I've taken a slightly more direct route, but I have to use tie wraps to get about 3/8" clearance from the power steering pulley. Not sure if that's a good idea...

Think there's enough clearance there? I haven't filled the system yet...

I really need to ditch either the headlight bar, or the pop up head lights entirely, I desperately need the room the head light bar is taking up.

Any thoughts on my hose routing? Think it's ok to run this way and just keep an eye on it? Is there some sort of metal tie/bracket that would be better than the tie wraps to hold the hose out of the way?

Eric, I'm really wishing I had you do the GTS head light conversion while you had the car...

Although I see that the hose is butting up against a flat piece of aluminum at a not-so-friendly angle so I would do something about that but otherwise, honestly, I'd run it while you gather the parts for the dual headlight motor setup or a fixed headlight kit.

I've got the head light motor for the dual motor swap, I just need to remove my smog pump to make space for it and get off my butt and install it. I'd rather do the GTS headlight conversion though.

Drains completely? Is this with the radiator cap on?

Doc, not sure if you did it already but may want to put some 'chafing gear' on those hoses (sorry , couldnt resist using maritime term Smile). Basically just cut a small section of rubber hose and split it down the middle. Then cover the coolant hose where it rubs / comes close to rubbing against anything. I like to do the same where the zip ties wrap around the hose to hold it in place.. i have seen zip ties rub through rubber hoses before.

Jack the car up in the front as high as you can get it, Remove the top radiator hose and fill it from there. I top them off completely and then slip the hose back on as quickly as possible. Do not run the car with the radiator cap loose or off. It will push water back out and you'll get air back in the system. Once it's full and the cap is on and tight, run it up to temp. let it cool down them check the water level.
