Another new guy!

hello everybody, been reading up quite a bit on the site, thought I'd finally introduce myself. I track a 951, it threw a rod on me the last event of the season... thought it was a great time to go LSx. I had a 2nd gen RX7 years ago and always contemplated the swap but never got around to it. My 951 is very well sorted, I just run DE's for fun, so no class requirements need to be met. I have 18 x 10's all around with 285's, RE control arms, weltmeister sways, Bilstein cup kit suspension. I'm a Lexus tech, our dealer network includes GM so I get a great price an GM crate engines. After looking into used and other options, I'm going to go with the LS3 I'm sure that will turn my 'well sorted' into 'unmanageable' but hey should be fun!
Luckily, being a track only car, I don't have too much to worry about. PS and alternator is about it. No AC, no heater. I'm going to use the GM harness with the DBW. Think I'll use the stock master cylinder minus the booster at first. Stock 951 radiator. I'm pretty excited to get this project going, should be a FUN car!

Has GM solved the oiling issues on the LS3's yet? Otherwise you might have a problem on the track with it unless you plan on dry sumping it...

I installed Smith Brothers oil restriction pushrods along with lightweight hollow stem valves on my L92 for peace of mind...the pushrods install took about 30 minutes:

The oil drains back faster to the pan.

I have heard about these issues - I am going to install an accusump to keep the oil pressure up

They have an oil drain back issue, not an oil supply issue. The accusump won't help.

Unless you are pulling more than 1.5G's in long sweepers and bouncing off the rev limiter a lot...I'd go with this recommendation:

Never a good idea to overfill the oil and a quart is a lot. The crank will turn the oil into a froth and you'll have lack of piling issues.

All the local tracks I run are counter clockwise, my 951 engine met the same fate. It was a previous E stock car (before I added the 285's all around) so no baffles in the oil pan. Heartland park has a fast on-camber LH carousel that seems like it would effect the LS3 the same way. I'll do some more research

Thanks for the heads up - I'm not ready to splurge on a dry sump setup plus a crate LS3 at the moment! I'll be looking at the LS6 or LS1 to get me going

Well, I found a nice '02 SS Camaro LS1 pullout. Took the stock engine out dec 26th, the LS1 is in and running - just waiting on an exhaust to finally be able to drive around

thank you. It was a LOT more work than I had originally dreamed up in my mind, but it was well worth it. Thanks to this site, and Eric at TPC answering my 100's of questions, it actually came together pretty quick! I'm just some exhaust hangers away from my first drive

Hello Andrew, I am in the same boat as you just starting my conversion. My starting point is finding the LS that the guys here have advised me to get for my project. I am not looking to build a monster just a great running street car. I really love the 944 body but they are just a little bit under powered. The 944 V8 is a GREAT all around ride. The handling of a Porsche with the reliability of the american V8 isn't that a match made in heaven. There is a post on Youtube of a 944 LS track car and it was devastating everything on the track and the guy didn't even sound like he was driving it that hard. Anyway good luck with your conversion and I would like to say I will answer any questions but that would be a BIG mistake because right now I can't answer my own, lol.

Hey JWS...Ive put so much $$ into mine making it go fast ( 346 RWHP ) but Im tired with issues with the motor..blowing head gaskets..oil leaks..etc..always wanted a V8 muscle car but love tracking the car with my P car buddies..so its time to get er done...been looking for a LS1 with low mileage..good luck in your path to the 948..

Still haven't completely decided whether my 951 or E36 is going under the knife.

Update..I now own a LS1 951..Ive been researching all the ins and outs for the past few months about doing a LS1 swap and got really lucky and found a 87 blk blk 951 with a 6 year old RH swap. Got it for a great price and after I sell my current ride.. the price diff is going to be quite minumum.
Just need to go through the car and see what needs to be replaced or upgraded.
Any suggestions or helpful tips would be appreciated.
My future goals are 450-500 crank HP...always wanted a thumper cam
