motor mounts

If I'm making my own mounts should I use the existing mounts and modify them or make them from scratch?

I'll be honest with you, while I love fabbing my own parts as much as possible, the motor mounts are a PITA to get correct. The angles have to be correct as to not put pressure on the block mounts, be correct fore and aft and the height has to allow clearance betweeen the pan and the crosmember. They are complex angles!

Eric (admin) has done all this work already so theyre bolt-in easy with clearances correct. And, the price is great.

To Be honest I am considering them due to their complexity, a long with the torque tube adapter. I was trying to see how such I could ,make myself, and that was the only piece I was having trouble wrapping my head around. Headers, oil pan, not a big deal but I saw the dimensions of the mounts and thought maybe I could make it. Your right, the $230 price tag is more than reasonable.

Yeah, the motor mounts and headers I would just buy from TPC if I had to do it all over again. But when I was fabbing those parts, they werent available yet.

I probably will end up buying his motor mount uprights anyway because his design eliminates the standard motor mounts with those round inserts which maximizes space for the steering rack and overall cleanliness.

I meant to say I was considering buying TPC's motor mounts due to the complexity of making htem, 1/8" off and you have an improperly mounted motor which will cause endless issues. However then I saw the angles, and they weren't something obscene, 60* and 30*, I took a 6 month course in welding and 6 month in lathe operations, as well as working as a lathe operator for 2 years calcualting threads for fiberglass pipe, I thought maybe I could have a go. However I don't have a stick welder, and I don't think a mig is strong enough for motor mounts, so not buying a stick welder alone is enough reason to buy them.

The headers, however, are substantually more expensive, and I've fabbed my own headers and even an intake manifold before, just cut the bends, tac them together while bolted up, tac them off and finish the welds. That might be tricky though, I'd have to have the motor in the car and piece it together and tac it there, then take the whole motor out and then finish the headers. That's a while down the road though, i need to pick the old engine and everything out, clean up the engine bay, and get the motor in first, and it's still in the 30's and low 40's here, which is a bit nippy for something like this. Plus I have to convert my garage for this project yet, new shelving, a new wall to section off the 944 and it's work space, etc. 10 more degrees and I'll be rocking and rolling, but until then kind of tough. I still have my plow tractor in front of the garage waiting for snow which only came once. I guess I can put that away now.

Don't say that, that's a sure fire way to make it snow. I'm the one who caused the mild winter by refurbishing my tractor and plow in the first place!

With sympathy to our brethren in the midwest and Europe who have suffered through a pretty rough winter already as I understand it.

I thought about doing this yesterday, and last night they're forecasting a nor'easter for sunday/monday. Timing is terrible, but at least I'll be home from my ohio trip to get my ls1 by then.

And I think I helped our mild winter by beefing up my plow tractor in the fall, getting new tire chains/weights, etc.

While those out west and in Europe had it pretty rough, and I feel for them, I'm a little jealous. Personally I love snow. if it's going to be cold, it may as well snow. I don't like cold, but if there's snow I'll live with it.

I have TPC's new motor mounts and I really like them. All the stuff that Eric makes is high quality stuff that works really well.

My one complaint is that he keeps coming out with more new, better products that make me want to update the stuff I already have and spend more money!

Ive had my snow blower sitting out under the deck waiting for use since late December.. . This winter has been really mild so far. I was offshore for it, but other than one week or so where it was really cold / windy its been mostly 40 every day. Not that i am complaining, i work in the gulf of mex. and its usually a shock going from 60-70 degrees (100+ in the engine room) to 30 degrees.
