For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Cam shaft suggestions? Empty Cam shaft suggestions?

Post  rooster Fri Jan 20, 2012 9:37 am

I need to get a cam kit ordered so I can finally get my motor freshened up. (I sold my previous track car and have $$ buring a hole in my pocket Very Happy ) I'm looking for suggestions since I know very little about cams. The cam discussions on LS1Tech are great but my eyes go blurry reading all the stats on cams. I'm looking for a cam that will be good for road course use so I believe I'd like a broad power curve. I'm not looking for the lumpy idle/peak power only cam that seems to be the rage for the 1/4 mile crowd. Finally I'd like to be able to drive on the street from time to time too, so nothing too hot. Any of you track guys out there care to tell me what they got and if you are happy with it? Thanks.

Cam shaft suggestions? Empty Cam

Me also, I'm interested in where to go cam wise for a power increase without making the engine lumpy.

I've got a Texas Speed 224R LSA 114 waiting to be installed. It's got rave reviews from a lot of the 5.3L truck guys all the way up to the 6.0L guys. I'd recommend either that or the 228R LSA 114. The LSA and a tune will make these cams idle like stock.

Also be aware of higher lift cams needing stiffer springs. The kit I have includes hardened pushrods and PAC 1218 springs.

Some other items to bear in mind when doing a cam shaft upgrade.

You will probably need longer push rods because larger cams have a smaller base circle, you cam supplier can suggest a size but this length should be checked. Another item to check is piston to valve clearance, with larger cam's this could be a problem especially if you have a decked block and or  shaved heads. I also upgraded my timing chain to a double roller, larger cam's do put more pressure chains and valve gear.

I run a 226/229 575/585 116 LSA cam with 7.450" push rods and 600 lift springs, I have this configuration with stock flat top pistons with no valve relief's. I will be upgrading to shaved 243 heads so ill have to check piston to valve clearance and may need new push rods.

You should check with this man.

Not neccesarily for the head work, he does a great job (he did mine), but call him give him your specs and he can get you or recommend a great cam.

Cam shaft suggestions? Empty Re: Cam shaft suggestions?

I have an EPS 226/230 LSA111 cam in my car. With S&P headers and a dual 2.5" exhaust I'm making 375rwhp. It idles fine, pulls well across the range and I drive the car on the street without any issues.

I had a 224 cam before and it was horrible. I made 40rwhp LESS with it and the motor made no top end power. I'm pretty sure the Texas Speed 224R cam is very similar to what I had and their 228 cam isn't a whole lot different.

Guys like the 224 cam because they can easily pass emissions with it. If that's a big concern, get it, but a good tuner can get your car to pass emissions fine with a larger cam.

Remember the F bodies have a much more efficient exhaust system then we do, if I was able to run a set of long tube headers like they can I'd probably be making another 20rwhp, so we generally need more cam then them to make the same hp...

A 224 is already pretty aggressive. Sounds like your headers and tune played a part with your issues of the 224. I'd also like to know the specs on your 224 cam (they aren't all the same).

The general idea on the LS boards is that shorty headers tend to favor a split between intake and exhaust duration. So with the S&P or any other shorty headers, something like a 224/228 would be a better choice. Long tubes tend to like matching durations.

I'm surprised you haven't switched to Eric's headers yet. They are extremely nice and would help you with that power you mentioned, and probably would have helped with your 224 cam.

It wasn't the tune. Two tuners both got the same amount out of it. It was the cam, a 224/224 cam is just really flat and has no top end to it. I swapped the cam and picked up +40RWHP.

Eric didn't have his long tube headers out when he built my car. To get them now would make me completely redo my entire exhaust system, which is an expense I don't really want.

Additionally, I'm at the top of the power/weight range I can be at for my time trial class, so if I did get the long tubes and I did gain a whole bunch of power with them I'd either have to bump up a class, or run a bunch more weight, neither of which I want to do.

Cam shaft suggestions? Empty pulled the trigger

Post  rooster Mon Jan 23, 2012 5:24 pm

Thanks for all the input guys. I spent some time today doing more research and calling all the well known LS1 vendors like Texas Speed, Thunder Racing, Comp, etc. After explining my goals and the type of car and intended use most vendors were in the same ball park with cam specs. They were all in the mid/high 220 range for Int and mid/high 220's for Ext with upper 500 to 600 lift. LSAs ranged from 112 to 115. I finally settled on a 226/230, 600/600 113 LSA with new dual springs, retainers, stem seals and push rods from EPS - [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] EPS seemed to be well regarded on LS1 Tech by the way. Now it's time to get the heads off and cleaned up in prepartation for the new springs and LS7 lifters that I just picked up today.
