C6 Z06 Brakes on my 944
After doing the LS1 swap on my 944, it was time to start upgrading various other parts to handle the extra power and track duty. The car is strictly a track toy and I hope to start racing in the NASA ST series soon enough.
I had the stock 951 brakes on there and i wanted something a bit bigger. The big reds are an obvious option, but still fairly expensive in my book (1500-2000 after its all said and done). I wanted to see if there was something more affordable or perhaps better in the same price range. My other issue was consumables(rotors/pads), they are fairly pricey for porsche cars. The one thing I loved about my old c5 z06 was the 40 dollars rotors and affordable pads.
After some research I found out that the guys running the 996 gt3 brakes are using the cayenne rotors and they're only 100 bucks shipped from amazon(i found that a nice price for a 350mm rotor). Onto the calipers, the 996 gt3 units are not cheap and generally hard to come by. A 6 piston monobloc alternative though is the C6 Z06 caliper manufacture by PBR. You can find them for about 600-700 bucks as take offs. I haven't bugged junkyards though(it could be cheaper). I bought a test caliper off ebay for 75 dollars, someone had listed it not knowing what it was (labelled as a 3 piston caliper :roflmao:).
I told Bruce (95ONE, rennlist member, dont think he's on here) about my idea, and after some prodding, convinced him to help. Bruce is an amazing fabricator and I knew his wealth of knowledge would come in handy. We mocked up the rotor/caliper setup and took alot of measurements. I then spent a saturday night modelling an adapter in ProE using our "precise" measurements.
This weekend Bruce and I were able to cut out an adapter and to our surprise the wholes lined up quite well. Today was the moment of truth, the test fit. It all lined up pretty well, we need to make some adjustments, but as a first run prototype we were both extremely happy.
Here are some pictures from today, I will keep this thread updated as I finish up the adapter and give it a shot at the next track day.

Nicety. Word to the wise...get a set of 87-up Turbo spindles/hubs ASAP.

The z06 calipers etc are installed on 87+ hubs(currently on the car). The 86 hubs in the pictures are my old ones.

Think this set up with work with a 17" wheel?

Not with that rotor size. You'd have to go to smaller rotor, which would mean a different custom caliper carrier.
What about master cylinder bore size to compensate for the much larger fluid area that the 6 piston caliper has?

Re: C6 Z06 Brakes on my 944
I'm currently running a hydroboost setup so it really depends on the limits of the mustang MC. Seeing how some guys are running 996 GT3 6 piston calipers on stock 944 MC's, I'm guessing it should be alrirght.

Re: C6 Z06 Brakes on my 944
I've got the same master cylinder. I'd be interested in seeing if a kit could be made cheaply to fit under a 17" wheel, which would mean using a rotor no larger than 332 probably...
I have a spare wheel I can send for fitment if this is something you think you want to play around with.

Re: C6 Z06 Brakes on my 944
I'm pretty sure my friend here has a couple rollers. I'll see if the 17's fit, there was alot more room than I expected with the 18's.
There will prob be issues making an adapter for 330mm rotors. The way the caliper sits now, the brake line mount/hole is directly above the porsche mounting bolt. With the 350 mm rotors there is enough room etc, however with a 330mm caliper I will have to bring it in closer and I'm afraid you won't get enough adapter material. I can also rotate the caliper towards the bottom of the wheel some, however I want the z06 mounting holes to be as close as possible to the porsche ones.

I also realized that my Turbo S M030 hubs are different than yours...

Re: C6 Z06 Brakes on my 944
Doc, I designed adapters to put Wilwood calipers on these Cayenne 330mm rotors.

Rob, designed them for the Turbo S M030 hubs? My calipers mount differently than the "regular" 951's...

All you would need is 87-up NA hubs/spindles. Sell the M030 stuff and have money left for beer and pizza lol.

Nah, not going to swap out my hubs. The M030 stuff is the bomb, so I'll figure out some way to work with it...

Re: C6 Z06 Brakes on my 944
M030 only takes a 304mm rotor. You could do a GTS 322 rotor swap, but then you'd have to grind the inner caliper sweep..... And all Porsche did was add 3mm to the NA/951 hub face to get the M030 hubs.
I just checked my notes and I weighed the 330 x 32 rotors myself at 23.4 lbs each.
