HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.

Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin

For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Replacement Cats? Empty Replacement Cats?

Post  acorad Fri Jul 22, 2011 3:19 pm

The PO put a Magnaflow exhaust on my 944, and lately one of the cats has a loud rattle w/in it.

Googling around it sounds like loose baffles w/in the cat. The cats themselves have a short curved pipe up to the headers, and are attached with bolts to the headers and rear pipes, so they are easily removed and replaced.

Any chance that these cats are a stock item that I can pick up somewhere and replace? Or would it be easier just to take it to a muffler shop and have them deal with it? I couldn't find any identifying numbers on the cats themselves.

I had considered clamping a large C-clamp onto the cat to see if I could pinch the cat body down onto the baffle so it doesn't rattle, but I think that even if it stopped the rattle there would still be gases bypassing the baffle, so the car wouldn't pass emissions here in CA.

What do you all think?

Thanks Mike. It looks like Magnaflow cats are $200+, and I think the curved pipe to the headers will have to be removed from the old cat and welded to the new one or something. Kinda more money and effort than I really want to put into the (stoopid) cat right now. I think I might try wrapping a big hose clamp or something around the cat to try to stop the rattle for the time being...

YUP! My son's car had to have the cat replaced last month. If I would have bought a CARB cat it would have been way over $500. I bought one (fed and cal approved but without CARB cert) and had it sent to my friend in Texas and he sent on to me. Cost? Less than $200. Friggin smog nazi's. This drop shipping is not legal BTW. But we passed visual and sniffer. You can try this at your own risk. OR go to LS1Tech.com and check out the for sell ads over there. Guys from non-smognazi lands are selling cats all the time and cheap. That is where I got mine for the conversion. Also remember, you are going to have to mod the cats yourself or find a cool shop to do this for you. Techically, you are not suppoed to modify them at all in California. Even cutting the pipe just and rotating can be considered a violation.

Hi all, turns out they are 2002 Camaro cats and I did find some OEM 2002 cats and had a local shop cut the old bucket-of-bolts cat out and weld a replacement cat in.

The rattle is gone!
