HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.

For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.
When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).
After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Re: Rich's LS powered 944 track car
I finally tackled adding vents to the hood today. This was my first time using a rivet gun and it was fun and pretty easy. It turned out looking okay and I think will help with cooling. First track day is in less than a month!

These louvers came stamped in 12x12" galvanized steel panels from 928motorsports.com. I placed them clear of the structure underneath but as far forward as possible to be in the low pressure zone for extracting heat from the engine bay.

I painted them with Wurth silver wheel paint and clear coat, looks decent for a shade tree job. And I did the fiberglass nose panel while I was at it.

Re: Rich's LS powered 944 track car
Rich, the vents do help, I have three on my car. Once thing to consider is that the vented nose panel will not help with cooling. In fact it may have the opposite affect by increasing underhood pressure and thereby decreasing what flows through the radiator. I sealed the nose panel on my car and it helped. Remember that the original reason for the vented nose panel was to cool the turbo intercooler, the air going through those vents does not get to the radiator (unless you've changed the ducting).

Re: Rich's LS powered 944 track car
Yeah, thanks Tim but I understand all that. My current setup is an RX7 oil cooler in place of the intercooler. The ducting is all intact so the radiator feed is still separate. Yes, I'm adding air to the engine bay with the vented nose through the oil cooler, hence feeling I need more exit space and adding these louvers to the hood.
I've been seeing good oil temperatures of 240-250. But the water is still getting hotter than I want; hitting the 100 C mark on the gauge and triggering the fans on track. Perhaps a single large fan in place is the stock dual fan and shroud deal would be good.

Filling the trans mount with urethane.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
After this hardens I'll be installing it with an AOR trans and finally mounting the VSS.

Re: Rich's LS powered 944 track car
I got the AOR trans mounted today. The VSS kit from TPC and short shifter from xschop are in.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Also installed a new shift lever with needle bearings from Kyle at only944.com. I added some length and a bend rearward to the lever to make it easier to reach from my 4" further back driving position.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
I still have some finishing touches like the shift boot and knob on and getting the axles installed. And I've got to say that clamping sleeve at the trans is a BEEOTCH. But it's coming along.

Looks good. I had not seen that needle bearing shift setup, how does it feel?

Just bought that same shift lever, looking forward to installing on my car eventually! Even with a new shift lever i had some side to side play from the shift rod being a little worn.

So far it feels great. I haven't driven the car and am actually shifting it dry as there's no fluid in the new trans yet. But there's no play at all and the action feels nice including xschop's short shift kit in the back.

Re: Rich's LS powered 944 track car
Those ones look really nice. The ones I got are very raw. I had to trim the edges, round the corners, drill the holes and paint them myself. They're look okay at 20 feet but up close are a little ragged.

Re: Rich's LS powered 944 track car
I learned recently that my engine builder hadn't upgraded the valve springs to match the cam he installed from Comp Cams. So I'm doing that now.
Here I've done #1 with 26918-16 springs, new seats and seals. And I'm setting up the CraneCams tool on #3. Notice the air hose in the spark plug hole where I'm feeding compressed air to support the valves.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
And now I've finished the left bank am have the rockers ready to be torqued. There's a good procedure for doing this torque-ing with the heads attached at this link.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
And here's the state of my workbench mid-way through this job. I'm sure this is a familiar sight to you all. I've kocked off and am having a beer (or 3) now. But I'll be picking this up to do the right bank first thing tomorrow morning.

Cheers!

Re: Rich's LS powered 944 track car
Comp Cams XR273HR-12
- duration at .050 220 in / 224 ex
- gross valve lift .530 in / .534 ex
Here's the engine dyno (at the crank), max of 438 CBPwr at 6400 RPM and 413 CBTrq at 4800 RPM.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
This is with an LS1 intake, 78mm throttle body and 85mm MAF. The cam was done by my engine builder with the rebuild. I've just now finally done the valve springs to match. Not really happy he didn't do the springs initially. Oh well. I just jammed around the neighborhood, it runs great and the LSD works...

Rich, is that your engine dyno? Have you ever had it on a dyno jet chassis dyno? That's a ton of power from a cam that's more mild than mine, in making 398 at the rear wheels

Re: Rich's LS powered 944 track car
Yeah, those are crank numbers. I haven't strapped her to a chassis dyno. But figure 20% drivetrain loss and a bit more loss due to the single 3" exhaust and 90 degree intake bend, I'm probably right around 340 rwhp. Weight is 2800 lbs with driver and fuel.
And here she is outside and on her own feet. The vents and nose look okay, not a very good paint match but no big deal to me.

Flat towing with a tow bar. I'm working on wiring it up to use the car's lights instead of the awful magnetic deals on the roof.

Doc are those numbers with your new FAST intake and long tube headers? I think you and I have the same cam so I'm curious.

Yep, FAST92/92 and the long tube headers. I'm at the power limit of the cam now. If I swap cams to the Futral one TonyG has I'd pick up another 20rwhp, going with the heads he has would be worth another 25-30rwhp.

Re: Rich's LS powered 944 track car
I moved my oil pressure sender to the stock Chevy location at back of the engine. It was in the thermostat on the engine side of the cooler / filter loop, which didn't see pressure supplied by my Accusump during pre-oiling or diagnostics.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
I used Autometer adapter 2268 that converts from M16x1.5 to 1/8" NPT. And installed VDO oil pressure sending unit 360-009. I had to file a bit of the lip off of the back of the intake manifold to create some clearance. A this install was a bitch to do with the engine in ther car. But it's done and now I get that warm fuzzy feeling of oil pressure when I key over.

Re: Rich's LS powered 944 track car
I have wired-up the car as a trailer with a set of diodes. These take input from either the car's normal wiring or the 5-wire trailer wiring that I've strung through the car with a connector at the right headlight. I know it looks like a bit of a rat's nest, but it's actually quite straight forward.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
I flat tow the car to the track, pulling it by the bumper with welded-up shocks. I had been sticking magnetic tow lights on the roof but they sucked. Now it'll use the car's normal tail lights, including the rear side markers, brake lights and turn signals. It's all much more visible.
