For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

xschop, where did you get the cvs with the heavy cages and bigger balls.and do they have them for the S2 with the 25 spline.

Type II CVs come from VW Transporters. They are only 33 spline though.

Have you guys measured the cages/balls on the S2 CV's?

Also, I've discovered there is a Type 2 CV that is 34mm thick. The 6mm Hex-head CV bolts work as they are 50mm long.

I do not own a S2 axle or CV, flying blind. I think i will by one and check it out, you can also buy just the balls and chrome cages for the 930, can we in cert into our cvs. When i go to the machine shop about my axles i am going to get a quote for new CM stubs made for the 930 CVs. You can buy a set of the Emphi stubs CM for there dune buggy applications for $150.00 US.

You about have it whipped. Great Job. I was thinking the 930 CV/stub flange will be too big for the inner trailing arm. I know they fit the early steel arms as there is no pocket in them.

I just checked with Pacific Coast customs ( dune buggy ) but they do not no about the 944 so they cant quote. xschop what do you think a reasonable cost would be to machine new CM stubs for the 930 Cvs for our cars? oR HAVE I OVER THUNK THIS PROCESS. i DO THIS SOMETIMES. I think they will fit in the alum arms.

If it were my mod, I would have 2 decisions

1) drill and tap the Vette outer stubs (strength allowing) since they fit the 944 Hubs....
2) Shorten-Respline the Vette axle to 33 spline and mount a type 2 CV right on the factory 944 stub shaft

I'm privy to #2 because everything will clear.

Get Empi or the more Expensive GKN/Lobro Type 2. The Empi's can be upgraded to Chromoly races and cages as well.

Get the entire kit with Boots, grease. IIRC those CV bolts are not long enough, you have to re-use yours.

Is that per CV joint?

If that is, you can pick up full axles for $70 each here:

I've got these coming in the mail and will measure the axle to see if they will just bolt right up. If not, I have extra 33 spline Porsche shafts that I will just swap the CVs to. I'd really prefer a set of Rob's axles though. Maybe some day.

When you get them measure the stress-riser area at the inner circlip. It's the first place the factory axles shear off.

Yes, they are $55.00 each. chrome moly cost more. I still have to by boots , grease etc. stronger thow.

Is that because of the transaxles floppiness from factory and or extremely off angles of the cage? It would be nice to see how many people have broken axles there and their setups. I know the cages have been exploding and a stiffer rear suspension with less travel and a proper transaxle mount should be the solution to that.

If you go chromoly, then yes. What I linked are EMPI axles, which should be the same part number. They come with boots and grease. You just need to supply the shafts. I am trying to save you at least $100 for the same parts. Razz

Thanks ,but my axles are the vette zo6 which will be cut and splined to 33, so the CM just makes sence.

Oh yeah, Xschop, regarding axles, I was reading something lately about new high HP cars with rear half-shafts, that were designed with the actual shafts themselves being different diameters such that wheel-hop was minimized. Sounds like with different axle sizes both wheels don't hop at the same time/amplitude/etc.

Anyway, just mentioning it in case you hadn't come across this idea before...

From now on, I will build the chromoly half-shafts (85.5up cars) and the end-user can choose either Type2 or Type4 CV's. I've had good results from Dan's Performance (Empi Type2) CV's. For our application their "High Performance" CV's are not good as they are loosely machined for high mis-alignment angles of Off-Road vehicles. The 944 suspension angles do not travel that extensively.

$365 per pair shipped US-48 only

Xschop- Im interested in your chromo axles. Are the dimensions the normal 21 + 3/8” inch long, 33 spline axle? Are they just like the ones from Dan’s Performance just not china low quality chromo? This would be a huge upgrade if there available.

I've shipped many sets without a single one being reported broken. When I cut the C-ring grooves, I usually bust a carbide cutter, that's how tough the 4340 material is. I grind my own carbide tips and cryo them. I've also cut thru the factory axles like butter with non-cryoed carbides.
