HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.

Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin

For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Mike, that's very odd. So, using this website:

http://www.kabamus.com/garage/gears.html

3k rpm w/ .83 5th would result in 69 mph
3k rpm w/ .73 5th would result in 79 mph

I'll test mine next chance I get, still the stock '87 944 na trans.

Gear ratios

Post by fliermike45 on Sat Jun 16, 2012 4:10 pm

I never counted the teeth either.
Will do a 3000 rpm check.

What does ROW mean?

It should mean rest of the world, Porsche used that a lot in describing models.

ROW

Post by fliermike45 on Sun Jun 17, 2012 7:55 am

How do I find out if my car is ROW? Does the VIN # hold a clue?

5th

Post by fliermike45 on Mon Jun 18, 2012 2:43 pm

Quoting from a 944HYBRIDS post made by Marc A:

"The early (pre 1985.5) 944 NA 5th gear is lower numerically than the 944 Turbo and 944S transaxle 5th gear ratios. (.73 vs .83)"

This would explain why my 88 NA owner's manual states that the 5th gear is .83
My Turbo trans has a 5R code and according to sloan's book had a stock .83 5th gear.

Guess I wasted my time swapping the 5th gears except I did fit a stiffening plate.

Here is the gear Iremoved from the Turbo Trans.

NA 5th

Post by fliermike45 on Mon Jun 18, 2012 6:14 pm

The buyer of my old NA transmission just called with the data.
It was built in 87 and is a 5Y type 16J and according to sloan's book a ROW W/O LSD.

This confirm's my suspicions that I now have a .83 fifth gear.

Glad you figured it out!

The little gear in your pic above has 29 teeth, so that's for sure the 35:29 (0.83) gear set, as it should be since it came out of a Turbo trans.

So I just discovered that my speedo is reading 8-10 mph low, so I am running about 2250 rpm at 70 mph with the 0.68 Audi 5th gear, which is exactly what I was wanting! Luckily I discovered the speedo error before I got a speeding ticket...

Hi, I haven't posted enough to be allowed to send PM's. I would like a copy of the paper you wrote if it is still available.
v8carreragts wrote:Unfortunately these thoughts don't work. The only gear that can be swapped is 5th gear. Third and fourth on the AUDI is press fit and the turbo/S/S2 use splines (one reason they are stronger). First gear is part of the input shaft and the input shaft is not swapable. The front end is too short and has a smaller diameter which requires a different case. (the case has smaller diameter input needle bearings) The AUDI input shaft is also .15" shorter between 2nd and 3rd gear along with the shift shafts and pinion. The AUDI case isn't machined for the turbo/S/S2 ring gear (the ring gear is slightly larger in diameter than the AUDI) and it uses a much larger bearing on the pinion ring gear end. The AUDI case doesn't swap with the Porsche case without a lot of specialty machining.

I wrote a paper comparing the G31, 016 and the 944 turbo/S/S2 (which is an 083 not an 016) and it has a lot of information about the differences between the 016/083. It also has some info on the 01E. It is in WORD format (.doc) and .pdf so I would need to e-mail it to anyone interested in a copy.

What gear is this? We want to upgrade my european 951s gearbox so the cruising rpm in five would be low like yours. But can't really find the gear you used.

Maybe i did not search enough or it is not mentioned. Embarassed

No worries: http://944hybrids.forumotion.com/t1190p15-5th-gear-options-audi#13514

"fyi, from my research: the swappable 0.68 5th gear is in '80-'82 Audi 5000 Diesels w/trans codes: UF, MN, BMO, WV, UW, MO, MR, AAW, AAV, AAY, AAX, AMM, & AMN.

edit: And from my research, the 0.68 is the tallest USA spec gear available."

I may have a supplier for the Audi .68 5th gear sets.
They are Audi NOS

What would people pay for these gear sets?

I still don't have enough posts to send or reply to a PM.

I should know how many gear sets will be available in the next day or so.

The price will be in the $300 to $500 range.

Reviving this from the dead.... But has anyone has issues with the N/A 5th gear swap into the turbo box? I was talking with Kevin Gross about doing a rebuild on my AOR with my early N/A 5th but he had the following to say:

"I agree that the AOR gearbox, with its stronger input shaft (esp. 1st and 2nd gears as cast into it) and LSD is the best route. Unless you are certain of its service history, I also agree that a rebuild and fresh fluid are important.

Fifth gear in your NA transmission (37:27) is a little taller than the 944 Turbo fifth (35:29) and a taller 5th is often seen as a good option for LSx transplants. However, keep in mind that fifth gear and the input shaft bearing next to it get lubrication differently and there may be an issue – emphasis on “may be” because I am not certain. Going the other way (late 5th in early gearbox) definitely starves the rear of the input shaft of lubrication and I have seen the damage from trying this. But in your direction, there are in fact two paths lubricating 5th (from the end of input shaft via hollow bolt, plus through two bore holes in fifth gear) which may be fine, or maybe not if the bore holes bleed off oil before it flows to the 016-311-427-C bearing in the end plate (steel center section). A more conservative choice would be to use the taller 5th gear from the 944S2 (36:28), but it is not quite as tall as the 944 NA.

(I looked into plugging the bore holes for a client about a year ago, similar issue. The path to do that would be to have a cryogenics shop drop pins into the bores, and I have one will to do the effort. The gear itself has been hardened to a Rockwell number usually seen on tools, and machine it for threaded plugs would be prohibitively expensive, requiring diamond drill equipment. This is the short summary of what I learned visiting a number of specialist machine shops, etc.)"

No idea about the Audi 4000 gears but I've had no issues with my NA 5th gear swap.  In fact Chris Cervelli did the swap and he didn't mention any issues with it and he's the 944 whisperer...

That's what I thought - but I needed some reassurance. Thanks.
