For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.
When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).
After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Oil pan gasket
I'm ready to fit my modified oil pan to the LS1, I checked the availability of a gasket at Advance Auto,
they want $47, any ideas, is the old one re-usable?

Re: Oil pan gasket
Mike, I cleaned both sides of the old gasket, block, and oil pan with alcohol, then put a 1/4" bead of High temp RTV (reddish-orange) to both sides of gasket and installed.....not a leak. I wish I had done this to the top galley gasket as it has a small leak, but that can wait for the head/cam upgrade.

Re: Oil pan gasket
I used a fel-pro gasket with a dab of RTV in each corner like the factory had. Make sure you check your welds very well prior to installation. I have had 2 pans the first one had an obvious hole in the weld, the second I didn't see a hole and it still leaked.

I would use silicone either way. Actually, the parts stores sell this stuff called "The Right Stuff" that is just plain AWESOME. It's expensive, but if you never want a drop out of your oil pan...

Re: Oil pan gasket
Do you think that would work with the holes in the welds? If I find anymore, I had a friend mig weld where the leak was on the last pan.

Re: Oil pan gasket
I am in complete agreement with Porch.
The GM spec gaskets are supposed to be reusable. I bought a new $47 Felpro gasket from Advance just to be sure. I also added black RTV to the corners following advice found on LS1tech.com. My gasket leaked bad. Puddle every time I parked, smoking headers, bad smell, embarassment, etc..... I removed the oil pan over the holidays and found the RH custom oil pan to be a sloppy job that wasn't so flat at the flanges (checked on granite countertop--flattest reference surface I had available). I straightened the flanges as best I could. Then I cleaned the RTV off the Felpro gasket. There is an RTV remover spray that works amazingly well. Then I sealed both sides of the gasket, all the way around, using "the Right Stuff" and buttoned her up. Now she doesn't leak a drop. The Right Stuff is worth every penny and I don't want to repeat that job again. It takes too much effort to drop the oil pan on these conversions!
PS...IF it is already leaking don't bother trying to tighten the fasteners any further. Helicoils are my friend now!

Re: Oil pan gasket
I have installed probably 6 of these gaskets over the last year. First off i wouldn't recommend reusing them because they are prone to leaking in the first place, and second I have compared the factory gaskets to the fel-pro gaskets and I swear they are made in the same factory, They are identical including the imperfections from being manufactured. Sometimes the fel-pro has a different color seal... Thats it. I install everyone i do with the silicone at the corners and haven't had one leak yet... Well see once they get some age to them...
