HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.

Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin

For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Thank you superman22x. What I have done so far was actually banged the tank all over with my hand and I was surprised by how much rust came out. I then used compressed air and that did a pretty good job of cleaning the tank for now. After a close inspection I think the tank can be dipped hot tanked and coated and be good to go. I have a local shop that does this. So I am going to take it down and see what they say.

So today's progress. Released the engine pulled the passenger side motor mount. Reshaped the metal shim between the mount and my cross member. This allowed the motor to roll more to the PS and level it out. I moved the trans/torque tube over to set the alinement. I needed to do this to bring the oil pan up on the drivers side to give me more space between my rack and pan. I have about a 1/4 inch now. I think this should be enough.

Well i discovered a small glitch. My torque tube hits the front of the tunnel on the top. My motor is sitting were it needs to be. My trans height is where i want it to be , it is sitting just a hair above the bottom of the floor. So now i will trim the front of the tunnel to give it the room it needs. For me this is all part and parcel with not doing the cross member drop. I also removed the brace between the frame rails at the front of the car, This is going to allow me to move the rad forward and to angle the unit so when i cut openings through the top of my hood there will be a nice flow of the hot air out of the engine bay. The build continues. I will post a few pics later of what i am talking about.

The problem is right were the weld is. The tunnel slopes down on both sides.  I will redue the top of the entire tunnel to make sure I have good clearances.

Well got the news on my gas tank. It was acid cleaned and pressurised. That part was good no leaks, The problem is there is some sort of a chamber in my tank which is preventing them from doing the liner. It ties in with the small vent pipe on the top. which they cannot access. So at this point i have to decide what i am going to do for a fuel tank. It either a cell and mods or buy the newer poly tank and make that work. I was hoping for simplistic that the old tank could be used, so back to the drawing board on that. I may look at my tank closer and see maybe i open the top of the tank and do a new sealed plate. I just dont want any crud going through all my new parts, pump filter injecters etc.

My vote would be for fabricating some straps similar to those that hold the stock tank, but for a fuel cell.

Since you have the room to use whatever tank you want, I would say absolutely use the factory poly tank. It will hold more fuel and won't rust ever. Otherwise, find a fuel cell that will fit in your car.
Plus having sealed many motorcycle fuel tanks, I've seen many of them that the sealer will start coming apart on, and you get major plugging then.

Here's a pic from my chump car team during our build.  We pulled the poly tank to clean it, but also so we didn't melt it while welding the cage legs above it, something you'll want to remember if you have a poly tank and are installing a cage.

You can see the two large protrustions, they hold a captive nut. A large bolt and washer pass through two openings in the tank to hold it to the trunk floor. There's also a strap which secures the fuel pump cover plate and supports the pump.

There is one strap and the fuel pump housing that goes under the sump part of the tanks. There are two holes through the tank that bolt it to the body. Hopefully the pics show what i'm talking about.

Thank you both for the info. So no cross member holding the front of the tank like i had. Those dimples can be duplicated for my application, So just bolted up through the rear compartment floor and a strap. This is a good option for me. Again thank you.

OK one more question, how thick or tall is the poly tank at the front edge. Why, I need to make sure I have enough room to clear the Z06 trans. My steel tank narrow's at the front to go over the cross support that holds the front up. I appreciate the info.

The front edge that goes over the trans is about 3" thick.
