HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.

For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

New convert under way - Page 14 Empty Hello and Thank You

Post  Slpr948 Mon Jan 19, 2015 12:35 am

Hi Kevin,

I wanted to come in here and say hello... I mentioned you in my thread but wanted to make sure I thanked you directly. I really appreciate you sharing your build its been a huge help and I love that someone else is crazy enough to try this too. I in the thick of my LS3/T56 swap and I look forward to seeing how both of ours progress. Youre a little ahead I believe and will probably finish before me but who knows... as long as we both get there!

GOOD LUCK WITH THE BUILD!!!  cheers

Here is my thread... [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Thanks for the kind words. It nice to see someone as crazy as me. The way i see it is just get in there and get it done. What are you doing for your cross member?. Hanksville hot rods made mine and they have it on file.Full DOM seamless tubing, a great piece of work. This has turned out to be a build and a half, but will be worth it in the end. Please feel free to ask questions. Most important have fun doing this, and good luck, i look forward to seeing your progress.

If I had access to a tubing bender I probably would go that route. I am trying to keep cost down though so all fab work will be done by me personally. Its much harder to cope and fit steel pipe together for proper welds than it is steel square tubing. So my plan right now is 1-1/2" .250 Wall steel tubing, double up in certain areas if necessary. This makes it real easy to do my templates out of wood 2x2s which measure 1-1/2"x1-1/2".

I actually made my wood templates yesterday and today. They arent complete  but fairly close for an initial try. The two areas that I am working on first are over the seat and over the trans/differential.

For the seat I am doing a simple hoop over the top like you had in pictures. Full width of the backseat structural support that had to be cut for the trans fitment. I am going to weld this into both sides with vertical end plates where the side/wheel well area is. I will also weld it horizontally directly to the oem seat structure bar.

For the trans I am doing a cross bar above the differential just below the gas tank like the original transmission cross bar.  I am creating a cradle off the cross bar that wraps around the backside of the differential to the original trans mount bolts. For servicing, the diff cradle will disconnect leaving the cross bar in place above. Just drop everything right out at that point and leave the cradle around the diff.

For the trailing arm ends that we cut in half... I am going to weld on thick block/plates that will have 2 bolt holes spaced a few inches off the tube... lining up with original sleeved bolt holes in the seat structure bar we cut in half. Ill have huge long bolts that go through those sleeves and through the new square tubing support bar thats welded above it. This should tie the entire suspension into the new seat support bar, that is welded into the side of the car and make it solid. I also may make the new inner mount for the torsion tube adjustable so I can change my toe there if needed... separate of the spring plate. I also may add a removable lower cross bar to tie the two torsion tubes ends together on the bottom to mirror the hoop over the top. Should add extra strength, but also be easily removable for servicing the trans.

I am not cutting up the entire tunnel like you did either. I am cutting off all the extra tabs on the torque tube and I will be cutting out a small area in the tunnel that will be boxed out to clear the side of the shifter. Keep in mind I also did not cut out the entire trunk skin, and the entire back seat skin. Just the areas needed to get the trans assembly into place. I want as much original sheet metal in the car as possible, and more importantly the least amount of work possible.

Really impressive Kevin and having owned a 924 many years ago I think the extra 400+ horsepower will make that car very entertaining. What have you decided to do for wheels and tires? It looks like you have room for a 12 to 15 inch rear wheel in back which ought to let you get all the power to the ground at the autocross courses, you might not even need Hoosier slicks. Smile

Hey Kevin, I'm about to start a set of 951-930 conversion axles for someone and wanted to see if you had a CAD file or tech drawing for those tapered CV adapters that you showed. Thanks and great work on your build. The Z06 trans will make the V8 a usable first gear again.

OK. No problem. I just ordered a set of 930 CVs so I'll come up with my own design. I have a spare trailing arm from an 87 to do a mock up. If you're not running more than 500rwhp, the adapters will suffice.

Do you think or know if these 951-930 cv's would hold 500lb-ft of torque?

I think they will hold, but I purchased the emphi CVs with chrome moly larger balls and chorme moly cages and all hardened that will handle up to 30 degrees of angle with no issues. My putptut will have over 500Hp out of my LS3.

Post  kevin924kevin Wed Sep 30, 2015 2:33 pm

Been a while since i have posted. Work has been crazy. I have been purchasing more parts, and more R&D. With in the next month or so, i should have the LS3 mated to the Z06 six speed and back in the car. I will post pics of this once its in. I will also post dyno specs as the motor will be tuned and run in on the dyno. Should see 525 to 560 HP out of my little ls3. tHIS SHOULD MAKE MY LITTLE TOY A LOT OF FUN TO DRIVE. My 924 is still on the Jenny Craig diet and loosing wait all the time. My goal is to have her under 2500 pounds by the end.

Nice to see neither of us have kicked the bucket on our similar projects.

I am making good head way, and while I still fully expect you to finish first... I hopefully wont be too far behind.

Good luck and post some pictures up when you can.

New convert under way - Page 14 Empty torsion tube

Post  kevin924kevin Wed Nov 18, 2015 9:51 am

Ok,update, the new torsion tube cross brace is being made. It will be made of 1.50 DOM seamless tube
mandrel bent into a hoop. There will be two units side by side and stitch welded together. This will be welded to the top of the torsion tube right where the trailing arms bolt up. Then i can cut the opening and brace the one side of the trailing arm mount and close in the end of the torsion tube. We will add gusets from the hoop down to the torsion tube.It will look very close to my cross member brace i did. you can see that in the pics. With this final piece i will be able to finally set the motor and trans in the car as a couple. I have the trans mount designed aswell, but will verify when the trans is back in. I am going to hang the trans off two new mounts off the trans and up to a new 1.50 DOM tube between the shock towers or that area. The trany mounts attach in the same area that they use for the 928 C5 trans. I have deside to go with the Ground control shocks. I think they will work just fine for my needs.

Post  kevin924kevin Mon Feb 01, 2016 11:06 am

As you can see by the pics, I have started the process of the torsion tube hoop. I will be adding a tube at 45 degree angle of each side of the hoop down on to the TT. Where the trailing arm mounts that will be cut away as per the lines on the tape. I am going to inset 1/4" plate inside the mount and out on the the end of the TT. There will be a gusset welded to the hoop and carry on out on to the top of the trailing arm mount. This should be plenty strong.
